It's odds on that "that British Betting Exchange place" (that we're not allowed to mention here) will get their first Aussie license in Tassie....

Does that mean that they will then be legal in all states or do I have to fly south just to place my bets?

The bookies in N.T. are licenced for N.T. but can operate on any Australian Racing... Will this be the case for [that place] or are they going to be able to operate only on Tassie racing?

Technically BETFAIR isn't illegal now. When it is licenced you will be able to bet on just about anything from just about anywhere.

BUT, as we draw closer to the date watch out for the hierarchy to bring out loads of suspicious races & blame them all on BETFAIR. Vengo being the first & by no means the last.

You’re right when you say "look out for the loads of suspicious races & blame them all on BETFAIR". Every time a favorite gets rolled there will be accusations of race fixing. The general public already think things are rigged and those sorts of things will do nothing to help racing in general.

I've had business's for many years and whenever a competitor starts up... You don't winge, YOU COMPETE!... The Customers vote with their feet!

i see a story where mr freedman has jumped on the anti betfair bandwagon..
i wonder what he would say if the race clubs told him they were going to round down all prize money to the nearest zero...i think he would squawk more than a collingwood supporter.............slowman

The fact of the matter is that because you have to lay a horse for so much more than what it is worth on the totes, then you could back every other horse in the race at best odds, and it would be just as financially viable as laying a horse.

All this talk about Vengo. Well the thing is, it was a $2.4 horse. It was always going to lose more times than it would win. And $70,000 traded on it, so what. If this horse was a certainty, well no horse ever is.
I remember seeing about $300,000 traded on Gonski running around at about $1.5. Yes it got rolled, in a 5 horse field. I backed it, but am I crying foul? No. Although I had traded the $80 winner for a handy little profit....


And I think that what they are trying to do to make it illegal is to charge a fee for the rights to betting on certain events. Every state in mainland is looking into this now, with the plan of having Betfair legal, but for them not to be able to offer markets for any of the mainland racing. All they can do is charge a fee, which I am sure Betfair will be more than happy to pay. I think Betfair if it is given the go ahead, will be here to stay.

When Betfair gets the nod in Tassie, there will be a flurry of new "Gauranteed Can't Loose" betting systems about.. (watch the form papers)

Many for sale with flashy promotions and a high price (Like $5,000 +)

Readers, if you have little or no experience in Horse Racing, forget it... Don't buy anything.. They will almost certainly be cons and your money will evaporate.

Picking loosers is supposed to be easy, god knows I've unintentionally been doing it for years. But making money coonsistantly by backing loosers is just as hard as picking winners with devestating effect when a bad trot is struck. You loose 10 times faster than you profit...

If you don't believe me ask a bookmaker... Go to the races one day and ask a bookie how hard is it to make a living backing losers...

It's not easy...

In response to the main question, I believe it will be legal as otherwise it could be regarded as restriction of trade between the states. But I don't really know. We will have to wait and see.
