The Aussies are $19 to win on Betfair at this stage, which is unlikely but tempting all the same. One "magical session" from Ponting would do the trick -said the stark raving optimist.

I also see that you can lay the Aussies on Betfair for a minimum $19.5. So assuming they don't win, a draw or the Poms getting up would ne a nice little earner!

Okay, once again, I'm a little lost there. I'm sorry, but what does that last bit mean? How much would you win if it was a draw or an England win? I still don't really understand the whole betfair laying thing.

In any case, I think Australia are really up against it here. The upcoming "Super Series" between Australia and the World XI is going to be a bit embarassing if we lose the Ashes.

I am no expert, just learning this laying thingy-magingy however this is how i understand it:
To 'lay' is opposite to 'backing'. So on betfair it has two columns, one says 'back' the other 'lay'. If i back the Aussies i am wagering that they will win, similarly if i back the Poms or a draw. Conversely if i lay the Aussies i am saying they will not win, therefore any other result other than the Aussies winning is good.

At this late stage i do not think that they will win, so given that i think the most likely result is either the poms will win by bowling them out or they will hang on to draw (i.e the aussie will NOT win) i wager to 'lay' the Aussies to win. I will win as long as the Aussies do not pull of the miraculous and get up. A draw and or the Poms winning will see my wager successful - laying the Aussies to win. It is the opposite to backing. Does this make any sense?

P.S I just remembered that here in Oz we can't bet online on mathces "in running" so it really doesn't matter - pity. However when Betfair start up over here with their new tassie license we should be able to phone it in, like IAS and others.

Sorry, after reviewing my post i have made an error.

If you lay the Aussies they must lose, a draw is no good as it is not a loss.

Cool, thanks Floydy,

That's good to hear re: laying the Aussies to win. As i type 7th wicket down, 170 odd more to get off about 25 or so overs. No way Aussies will win now i am sorry to say. Laying Aussies to win woulda been nice little 'bickie' earner!

I will drop you a line soon to discuss further

Woo-Hoo - what a result!

Is that all you got Poms?
Wouldn't like to be you if these Aussies start to play.
Nice innings Mr Ponting.
Sleepy time now.
Woo-Hoo

Yes. Very happy (relieved) with that result!

They've got 9 days now to get things right for the next test. They basically played with just 2 1/2 bowlers in this test. After all, Gillespie did nothing once again (why did they pick him???) and McGrath obviously wasn't 100% during the first innings.

The poms are outbowling us EASILY. Flintoff and Jones looked far more dangerous than any of our bowlers. It was amazing that we escaped with a draw.
