Joe Hachem... what a star!
I have to admit to getting a bit misty eyed on a few occasions watching interviews and footage of Joe Hachem after his amazing victory at the World Series main event. I just know how he'd feel. Not the winning $10 million Australian so much, but the sense of vindication and the achievement against incredible odds.
To me Joe is the perfect advertisement for multicultural Australia, the son of a Lebanese migrant who has battled hard and earned his shot at every poker player's dream. When he turned that dream into reality his cheeky humility shone brightly amongst the the Las Vegas hype and there was something unmistakeably Aussie about his reactions.
He was one of the 10% minority who actually bought his way into the event with hard cash, so good on him, a true gentleman of the game. I loved the fact that he hadn't told his parents because they don't approve of gambling!
Joe, a toast to you and your inspiring achievement. You give us all an extra filip.
