G'day All Stix here (real name Tony)

I'm 32 yo, live in the most liveable City in the world (Melbourne) and I am lifesytle consultant by trade (Chartered Accountant)

I've always had an interest in horses, both gallops and harness. My Uncle used to race pacers and trotters around Shepparton so I've always had a soft spot for them (Like Barney !)

I guess it's funny that as I was growing up, I always used to watch Wide World Of Sports on 9 and they'd have the racing on a Saturday afternoon and I'd like to go throught the form and pick a few to follow as I studied away.... then I noticed the form guide used to be taken out by my (evil) step Mother and thrown in the bin as she picked it up from outside once it had been delivered....... Bi%ch !! I had the last laugh and used to hide it amongst my notes!

Then at uni I bought a program called Hooves OF Thunder which was a Horse racing/owning/training simulation and I used to to try and win at that, wouldn't be happy till I had a stable of champions and $10M in the punting kit..... so my competitive streak was starting to take over and my interest in "winning" at this game intensified.

Once i moved to Melbourne to a firm where the Partners were heavily into racing - one loved the gallops, the other heavily into racing/breeding trotters - and we had the odd punting syndicates which did OK..... but my real interest into serious punting was sparked by a little horse nicknamed "Elvis" that from memory was beaten just by Kempinsky ina Group 2 @ MV - I remember My Dad and I were fishing and had the radio on and it was the most enthralling call I had ever heard for some unknown reason......Then after the race the caller said these two have a future in front of them.... guess he was right about one of them...

Anyway from that day I've put my head down and had a crack at this caper and I am happy now that with with my efforts - in what amounts to almost 3 years of punting - I now own my own home and have enough cash keep the missus happy (VERY important!)....... (still pinch myself!)

Anyway, that's my journey to the "Dark Side"..... OH... and of course GO PIES !!

Tony

I'm 35yr's young live in Brissie been on the punt since i was about 17. Just over 3 years ago i discovered this site and read just about every thread that was here. I learnt so much in such a short amount of time. I've always been lucky on the punt but had no idea of staking , ratings , systems or anything..
I looked at systems but found that your own ratings,,speed maps and heavy video study works the best ,,for me anyway...also level staking is proved the biggest help ..
I started a "Mavs Tips" thread so i could experiment with some level stakings and beginners luck seemed to shine for awhile there. This was the platform and was even lucky enough to get a kick off a friend who won a stack backing a few horses i had tipped him in a row.
We now have joined forces with another and target the Saturdays. This involves input from all 3 of us,, we then discuss the races we'll be betting on (final say is up to me) I usually head to the track and atleast one of us stays home on the net. This way we get the best odds available...
I suppose we do things against the norm,,,Trifectas ,trebles and 1st4's and even exactas ...plus we bet in anything up to around 15 races on a Saturday...but things seem to be working though..especially of late..
I have a small following that have my email and have shown interest in joining the syndicate....but its alittle early for that sort of thing but something we might look at in the future....dont want that sort of responsiblity yet..

I bet with my own cash on other days but not the same stake as on Saturdays ,,and not very well the last 6 months...but overall the figures are good so im sticking with it for awhile longer..
I guess the secret to our success is we are betting with winnings. i guess this makes us alittle more brave as we arent risking our nest egg or anything...we all have well paid jobs (Operations Manager in the transport Industry) and although i've gone post divorce midlife crisis nuts of late with globe trotting , buying donkeys ect we are all still very secure...
I plan to have an extended holiday next year,,travell to Europe and then concentrate on going full time...imagine following the carnivals around interstate and overseas and just doing ratings ,watching races all day...tis the life for me.

I dabble in breeding and have shares in racehorses,,,maybe you can guess which ones if they start winning i'll let you know..

oh...love my footy, love the cricket and play alittle golf (off 16) huge U2 fan and have seen there concerts at different cities across the world..luckily saw them in LA last year as they cancelled there concerts here in OZ...

Good thread Mr Ed..

In agreement with Crash's sentiments, it's the only vice left for me...

I'm also an international man of mystery. I'm sorry but that's all i can say at this point.

Wink

Anyway i am 21 years old, and a Uni student in Melbourne, I work part-time in a bar and spend most of my free time studying the gi-gi's.
Cheers Daniel.[/QUOTE] [Mad].

Ah mate. 1960's to early 70's Melb. Uni. scene [a fresh face kid just down from Surfers Paradise where I grew up, to move into a shared house with cousin Silvia a librarian at Latrobe library with the rent at $18 total for a 4 bedroom terrece house], the Carlton scene, the parties, the pubs with live bands, the $2 flagons of red [glass flagons] and green ginger wine ....and the women. oh the women [and the mini's]! Duffle coats and desert boots, the politics, the demo's, burning of draft cards [not this boy though], Ryan the last man hung....'Jonnies Green Room' open 24/7 [pool],

'All meals half a crown standing up or lying down' was the sign at the cafe next to the Carlton 'Bug House' [cinema] which had canvas seats and with a girl you could ..... anyway brought a tear to this old eye thinking of those days.

M/Valley night trots and Saturday racing with my Grandfather who bred a few horses out on his farm at templestowe on the yarra [yes farm, no suburbs past Heidelberg in those days]. Being picked up by him in Carlton in his big old fashioned Jag that always smelt of leather, hay and horses.

The introduction to the mysterious punt and all his racetrack mates from the stables to the members. A great old ****** who is now probably still among his punting mates and twisting a Bookie's arm up in the 'top paddock' [must be a few that made it up there] for 'fair odds' on long dead champions, still racing 'furlongs' on feathered racetracks among those wispy clouds .. ...'give me 5's, give me 5's on the big grey' !

Cheers to all.

Hi everyone.

I don't post on the site as a rule. I think out of fear for putting up donkeys and the ridicule that could follow.

I am 31 years old, married 3 kids the eldest by default who is going to make me a grandfather this year.

My name Malua comes from the horse that one the Melbourne Cup the year my great grandfather was born. Never knew this until he gave me a rifle when I was about 12 with his name and year of birth scratched into it.

I love horses in any form and really enjoy seeing people getting the best out of them in any discipline.

I have followed the races since a young age as my great grandmother was a SP Bookie.(although I am too young to really know how all that worked)

I have owned shares in 5 horses and my greatest thrill was one of them running in Brisbane. He ran 8th but I was still proud to have got one down to the big smoke. The horses won 4 country cups out here in the west between them and as an owner you feel 10 feet tall when you are in the winners stall.

As a rule I punt only on "blackbookers" that I have seen or heard go round and thought were a chance next run.

If I stuck to this plan I would be a mile in front, however I also have the eternal problem of too many bets, some when looking back at them were absolute stupidity.

I also follow trainers, love Brian Mayfield Smith, probably cause he did time as a ringer up north where I grew up, and Craig Smith because he trained a couple of my horses and is a genuinely top bloke.

I think the guys who consistently put forward their thoughts are to be highly commended, I especially enjoy the Saturday Brisbane rundown and the My selections for today.

I think the forum is great, only recently I had a look at another one and there is more posts on bagging others than about the racing. Not my scene thanks.

I really should post more and promise I will endeavour to do so.

Tim

Red face The tears are welling.

Now isn't this just the best thing you've read on this site for ages.

Must admit Crash the old "oh my god, what have i done!" feeling, certainly entered my mind the next morning. I think it was this feeling juxtaposed with with them crownies and red wine 'don't ask', that had me face down in the toilet early 'the morning after'.

Good on ya's for having a go, my mates all gamble but none of them have any real interest in racing, that's why i like this site.

P.S What ever happened to that Paddy bloke, he did a top job running this joint, not that your'e sherking the task at all Sportz.

Cheers ED

An interesting read fellas. Good to put some background behind the names.

I am about 30, a doctor in rural Queensland and have been punting since I was about 18. Have my good days and bad days but have imroved a stack since getting some ideas from this forum. I would love to have a magical, simple, reliable and guarranteed profitable system but am still looking. I don't post on here as much as I would like becuase I have not developed 100% confidence in my selections yet and wouldn't want to lead anyone else down the garden path. I appreciate the contributions made by everyone and in particular love the Brisbane thread.
