Thought the runs of Fields Of Omagh, Distinctly Secret, Beekeeper & Rain Guage in yesterday's CC, put them all into strong calculation for the Melbourne Cup.

It seems that Republic Lass is going for a spell & will not line up in the MC.

The punter who had just won the $200,000 jackpot on the Melbourne Cup was asked by reporters how he would spend the money.

“Oh, I’ve got that all figured out,” he said.

“First I’ll spend $50,000 on whisky and beer, $50,000 on horses, dogs and cards, and $50,000 on women and wild living!”

“Wow” said one reporter, “and what of the other $50,000?”

Shaking his head in embarrassment, the punter replied, “Oh I will probably just squander that”!

Suggest those of you that think Northerly can win the MC, should bite the bullet and get on now (fixed odds). Come race day, the weight of bets from the once-a-year punter and many of the Sandgroper’s will ensure poor value when they jump.

See two of my three early picks Vinnie Roe & Media Puzzle, are still in the line-up & primed & ready.

Love the 50/1 odds I got for Media Puzzle some time back

Internationals always come over here with the hype that they are going to flog us, and that usually never eventuates, with the exception of Vintage Crop. All I can say is anyone who watched the Caulfield Cup run of Grey Song would be wise enough to have a tickle each way. While he lacks the genuine class of the raiders and our other top horses, he will run all day and has won over 2800 m. of Flemington. All I hope for is a good dousing of rain like last year, and I can see him as being one of our better hopes in the cup.

NORTHERLY is among the third declarations for next week's Melbourne Cup but trainer Fred Kersley has warned punters he is extremely unlikely to start.

Kersley paid up as a precaution but said he would talk to all the owners before a final decision was made on whether the Cox Plate winner would take his place in the field. "I committed to paying up, but it should not be interpreted that he will run," Kersley said on Melbourne radio this morning. "We need to consider what is in the best interests of the horse.

"There's a fine line between being fit and being over-trained. "There is a flight back to Perth on Wednesday and I've pencilled him in on that. "As soon as the final decision is made I will let everyone know."

Kersley has already told Patrick Payne to accept another ride in the $4 million Cup (3200m) next Tuesday further indicating Northerly will not take part. Payne won his first Cox Plate aboard Northerly on Saturday and is in the running to ride international candidate Jardines Lookout.

Northerly's win in the Cox Plate was his eighth at Group One level and he has now earned more prizemoney than any other Australian-trained horse with $7,890,650.

What happened to Gillespie? He was one of the only Ossie chances to beat these raiders... Ran 3.18 over 2 miles. Unbelievable. At least Lester Thunderwing is still paid up. He'll stay if he gets a start.
