Did you check the sectionals in the derby last year? They walked and then came home in 33.77. So perhaps it wasn't a staying test, more sit and sprint, but it would be hard to say he struggled at the distance as if he was really that tired he could not get home that quickly. however 2500 metres as a 3yo is still a staying test in my books. He wont run strong 3200. Not sure if he can run 2400 in open age and at weight for age and he is disadvantaged in a handicap. I like helenus, backed him in guineas, derby and rosehill guineas but not sure if he is a genuine stayer. just a tough grinder. He's not too different to Northerly in terms of racing style where he just keeps coming at them.
in regards to the derby i think platinum scissors would have come home even quicker.
