Smarty went down by 1len in the very smart time of 2:27.50 for the 2400M. In the end outstayed by the winner.
What a great drawcard he could be if they could get him to our shores. Cox Plate ?

Smarty Jones paid $3.30 the place when he was 1/9 favourite????

How did that work!

The dividends are based on $2 units in America, so $3.30 is like $1.65. Also 'Place' over there is only 1st or 2nd. The dividend for 'Show' (1st, 2nd or 3rd) was $2.60 or $1.30 for a $1 unit. Even so, that's still WAY more than a 1/9 shot should pay, so maybe he got out in the betting.

Thanks for that Sportznut, had no idea they used $2.00 units.

As you say $1.30 the place is pretty good.

Can't wait til we get minimum return of $1.05 here in Victoria in a few months.

The only problem is, I forecast a reduction of the other runners to compensate.

CP,

I just heard an american guy on the radio talking about this. I found it a bit hard to understand. The way he explained it, the fact that an outsider won the race actually increased the Place and Show dividend of Smarty Jones. I'm not sure if that's right or how it works. Maybe Glenn has some idea.

Anyway, he also said that the overwhelming majority of punters simply backed Smarty Jones to win and totally ignored Place and Show betting. Apparently it was the most win bets placed on one horse in American racing history.

I had a win bet on Birdstone, who paid $74.00 to win on a $2 bet. It was one of my saver bets, and it saved my cash! Sorry I didn't report earlier. In the parimutual system of wagering we have, yes, a longshot will increase the payouts on other horses, since so few people bet the long one.

Glenn
