I've read that Main Stage, who won Sunday's AHA Cup (2000m) at Bunbury, has not been re-handicapped in the Pinjarra Cup (2200m). The handicapper believes the Pinjarra Cup has attracted a much stronger line-up.

Also reported that an injury has forced Opening Twist out of the Pinjarra and Bunbury cups.

Courtesy The West Australian website:

ACE jockey Stephen Miller has flown to Melbourne early to give top WA galloper Old Fashion his final track run this morning for his Melbourne debut in Saturday's weight-for-age $400,000 Futurity (1400m) at Caulfield.

The dual-licensed horseman has given up drives at Gloucester Park and rides at Ascot to retain his association with Old Fashion, who gave him a career highlight in winning the $500,000 Railway Stakes last November.

Old Fashion, the Neville Parnham-trained Irish Pride, tiny filly Twin City Gold (Chris Willis) and Heavy Nova (Fred Kersley) give WA a strong support cast to Kersley's champion Northerly, who continues his Australian Cup preparation in the $100,000 Victoria Gold Cup (2020m).

Miller said last night trainer Vern Brockman had primed Old Fashion for a first-up assault on the Futurity.

"Vern picked the Futurity as one of his main targets and gave him plenty of work before taking him over this week," Miller said. "I could have gone over after the trots on Friday night but I want to give him his top-off gallop.

"Vern was very pleased with his work before the trip and with the way he has settled in at Caulfield."

The Kersley duo of Northerly and Heavy Nova completed their final work-outs in fine style yesterday morning, with Northerly's full-time strapper Sheree Hough riding the champion and former WA hoop Patrick Carbery on Heavy Nova.

Hi Paddy. On WA rated form, Old Fashion is rated some 3 lengths inferior to Northerly.

If Northerly was running in the Futurity, would you expect him to win and by 3 lengths or more.

There were three two year old trials held at Lark Hill on Monday 24th.

In heat one the winner was Southern Raider for trainer Bernadine Dudley. The filly is a sister to the recent promising winner Ginger Gem and a half sister to a quality galloper of a couple of seasons ago in Crusoe. Wining margin was 3/4 length over Catch The Cat with Argentalo third. Time for the 400m was 25.75 seconds.

The second heat was won by Driven To Victory. Trained by the in form Vernon Brockman, Driven To Victory is by Victory Drive out of Kintore's Luck. A full brother will be on sale in the Perth sales next month. Winning margin was a nose over Magic Pace with Tribal Warrior third. Time was 56.5 seconds for the 900m.

The final juvenile heat was won by Say Mio. By Don't Say Halo out of Milione Mio he is a full brother to the good Belmont winner of last year in Amio. The winning margin was 2 1/2 lengths over Tee Bird with a nose back to Bonny Pastime. The time of 55.5 seconds was as good as the quickest heat time for the older horses in the later trials.

Info from the WATURF Club.

Courtesy The West Australian website:

In-form jockey Jason Whiting was booked yesterday to take over riding smart stayer Tango Man in next Sunday's $80,000 Swan Draught Pinjarra Cup (2200m). Tango Man, an Ascot winner with 57kg last Saturday week, has 52.5kg in the cup.

Quality galloper Son Of Vasac, who won Saturday's Ascot welter with 58kg, drops to 55.5kg in the Pinjarra Cup and top jockey Paul Harvey is expected to maintain his association with the chestnut.

Son Of Vasac's trainer, Bernadine Dudley, said yesterday the five-year-old was thriving and had pleased connections by settling smoothly on Saturday.

Miss Torpago, a close second to Son Of Vasac on Saturday, will be trainer David Harrison's Pinjarra Cup runner.

Harrison is starting Blevvo and Storm Shot, to be ridden by Alana Sansom and Peter Farrell, respectively, in Thursday's $40,000 Chaff City Classic (1300m) at Pinjarra.

"Storm Shot and Blevvo will also be Bunbury Stake runners on March 18," Harrison said.

"Blevvo will then go to Sydney. Jim Cassidy has been asked to ride him there."

Party Boy, entered for the Pinjarra Cup and $100,000 Swan Draught Bunbury Cup on March 20, staked a claim on the double when he won Saturday's 2200m handicap at Ascot for trainer Mark Bairstow.

The five-year-old won a Tasmanian Derby and a 2400m race at Caulfield when trained by Lee Freedman.

There were five two year old trials held at Ascot today.

In heat one the winner was Allume. The filly is another of the Chanteclair stock who have done so well in the juvenile races this season. She is out of Madame Geisha making her a half sister to the handy galloper Miller's Fancy. Winning margin was a short neck over Is It Love with 2 lengths back to Air Pocket, who was sent back to trials after bungling the start last Saturday when favourite. Time for the 400m was 23.5 seconds.

The Stan Bates trained Tissot won heat two. The filly is by Laranto out of Khaddad and is a sister to the Listed stakes winner Supranto. Margins a 1/2 length by a 1/2 length with Sonic Cruiser second and Beau Asassin third. Time was 23.75 seconds.

The Joe Byrne trained Rave was the winner of the third heat. She is a half sister to Czariffic and is closely related to Larwood's Gift, two horses Byrne has had success with. The winning margin was an impressive 4 3/4 lengths with Moonfire second and 1 1/4 lengths back to Universal Secret third. The time for the 1000m was a slick 59.75 seconds but that was not the fastest ime of the day.

The fastest time of the day for a 1000m trial in any age group was recorded by the winner of heat four, Forever Friends. The Royal Abjar filly is trained by Ted Martinovich and is out of Carry A Smile mare Caresse. She clocked 59.5 seconds to beat Explosive Power by a neck with 1 3/4 lengths back to A Lot Of Hooley third. The winner was placed first up back in November behind Spin On In and has ability. The runner up also looks to have ability and could be one to follow on debut.

The final two year old heat was won by the Carol Albuino trained Our Whisper. By Saltgrass (USA) the gelding (yes the only one in five juvenile heats) improved sharply on his last outing when a distant fifth behind Cristobal in a 1000m trial on February 17. Margins a 1/2 length by a 1/2 length with Sharhalo runner up and Southern Raider third. Time was 61 seconds flat.

And the top'o the mornin to everyone, gee it's great to be alive & kickin

News on the west australian website this morning includes the following interesting article:

Leading interstate trainers lodged a string of nominations before entries closed yesterday for next month's $300,000 Healthway Karrakatta Plate, $150,000 WA Oaks and $300,000 WATC Derby.

Tony McEvoy, Lee Freedman, Michael Moroney, Peter Moody, Graeme Rogerson and Bill Mitchell indicated they would have runners in autumn feature events.

"Impressive winners Living Spirit, Come On Rory and Carlton Conquest have been nominated for the Karrakatta Plate by Tony McEvoy," WA Turf Club racing manager Greg Carpenter said. "Peter Moody's winner Snip Attack is also in the Plate.

"Graeme Rogerson's Sydney winners View From Above and Fawaz are in the WATC Derby. Michael Moroney entered Davidoff and Money Belt for that race. Melbourne winner Schumpeter was entered by Peter Moody. Tony McEvoy, Lee Freedman and Bill Mitchell also have Derby entries.

"Freedman put Victorian winner Dance On Wood in the Oaks and Tony McEvoy nominated the Melbourne winner Jameela.

"There were 18 eastern States nominations for the Karrakatta, 22 for the Derby and 15 for the Oaks."

Also as mentioned in an earlier posting, Blevvo returns to racing at Pinjarra tomorrow in the Chaff City Classic (1300m). Looks a nice betting race - any advice on this race from our Perth punting "experts" would be most appreciated.

Also now reported that Blevvo could go on to the Queensland carnival (I assume winter carnival). Earlier news item suggested a Sydney visit was also on the cards :???:

Maybe doing both locations.
