NSW premier Mike Baird has announced that legislation had been passed ending the July 2017 closure date of the greyhound racing industry in NSW

A new body will be set up to govern and regulate the industry and will be chaired by former NSW premier Morris Iemma

New regulations which are key parts of the new deal to reverse the ban, include:

Capping breeding to 2000
Reducing the number of greyhound racetracks in NSW
Reducing the number of race held in NSW
Whole - of-life dog cycle management
A $1500 bond for every dog bred in NSW

Former NSW Premier Morris Iemma will chair a new five-member board of the reconstituted Greyhound Racing NSW that will run the industry’s commercial operations.

“The new board will be responsible for overseeing the industry’s commercial operations including prioritising greyhound welfare and positioning the industry for the future.”

The NSW Government will soon appoint the three Commissioners of the new independent Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission that will regulate the industry, target wrongdoing and enforce animal welfare standards.
