Default What it takes to be a pro

Bit bored here so interested in something a little different; A looking glass into various versions of what it means to be a professional gambler and having a 'bit of a larf' along the way if possible...

Will kick off with a proper smart geezer

Cheers LG

Yes he does but he is also an understandable product of his generation - background. He dabbled as an owner for a bit - owned Denman which won the Gold Cup in England.

Thanks LG, yes I've often admired his courage. However as aussie points out, you can't help but get the feeling his luck will run out. He's bold and a bloke's bloke, but he's far too volatile and has been close to losing the lot on more than one occasion.

Who is Terry Ramsden?

According to legendary horse racing pundit John McCririck, Terry Ramsden was the man

Enjoy!

Interesting addendum from Racing Post:

Ramsden's affairs were in court again in 2008 when City stockbroking firm Hoodless Brennan obtained a High Court judgement against him; he was reported to owe the company more than pounds 1m.

Ramsden will be 60 next year; a third coming would appear unlikely.

He appeared not to believe his own words in that old interview. His demeanor did not evoke confidence at all. Rather a man struggling to recapture past luck.
Luck seemed to play a part in his start and his rise, and ultimately his fall.

Using the oncourse tote to have substantial place and show wagers - the bloke was betting against himself, ruining his own odds.
Full of life and bluster, but by no means an intelligent punter.

Yes, interesting indeed Chrome. You have only touched on the tip of the iceberg in this respect however. Plenty more to learn from this example if one has the time or inclination to watch the clip? Cannot change the title of this thread as far as I am aware BUT it should in fact read...

What it takes (and doesn't take) to be a pro

Cheers LG

Hi LG,
Yes I did watch the clip in it's entirety, these stories do fascinate me.
More from an observation perspective.
I like to look at the body language and secret ingredients that make these men.
I think Zeljko beats these guys hands down in most areas, but these videos are far more fun.
Thanks for sharing.

Think Usain Bolt would make a great professional punter when he retires:

"Easy is not a option..No days off..Never Quit..Be Fearless..Talent you have Naturally..Skill is only developed by hours and hours of Work"
