I can understand the principal idea and the cpu v gpu info but the equations are beyond me.

CPU is your general processing power, GPU is your graphics processing power.
Only need to worry about GPU if you're a hard core gamer which incorporate very intensive and highly rendered fast games. My on board graphics does me fine with most games, whilst those addicted to hardcore gaming, run high end graphics cards with water cooling!
