Computer stuff- decisions decisions-upgrades
To some this may seem a non issue.
For others it gets taken care of by your PC "mechanic" But the rest, it's worth at least knowing about options. The point is, in a general global sense, monopoly does not last it seems, Migration might be Monopoly's Nemesis ? ------------------------ Quote:

Windows 10
I run betting software over night for UK horses and dogs. Windows 10 automatically downloads and installs updates and reboots computer even with software running. This of course stops the betting software operating even in the middle of a transaction or betting sequence.
Just a warning if you are thinking if installing Windows 10. |

I have not looked but all windows ops have been able to turn this off or set to notify you of new updates rather then just installing them.
example windows 7 Control Panel >Windows Updates> Change settings Make your choice from drop down box.

Not with Windows 10. It is a big gripe among people who have installed Win10. Luckily I have another PC with windows 7 so will not upgrade that one. |

Shaun In Win10 only the Enterprise edition allows you to chose which update you want, for obvious reasons, IT dept. don't want hundreds of machines doing different things. With Win10 Pro, you can only delay certain upgdates upto a month. Win10 home or any other flavour forget it, you have no say in the matter of updates. I've been running Win10 for quite a while now including the final version and sorry to say I'm sticking with Win7 as my production machine. Nothing wrong with Win 8.1 either! Also beware of the search feature, Bing will send every single request to MS servers for analysing and tailoring the ads you will get. (including your details) But it's easy to turn it off. Maybe, maybe matter of time till they succumb to the advertising dollar, but for now. I've switched to, ( and deleted everything Google, something ain't right with it, too busy to look into it though.) https://duckduckgo.com/ As for the Win10 thing ? Don't like the forced updates etc. Have not decided yet, but I got 4 XP IBM's to sort out very soon, talking with a techie for some directions/options..., ongoing. Suggestions welcomed. |

Sorry I wasn't clear. It is the search function of Win10, part of 'Cortana' I was referring to. If you install Win10 in 'Express' mode (recommended by MS for obvious reasons) you will get a search option in the Start menu, this will search the net every time you are looking for something, not only your PC as most of us would expect. This is where Bling, MS's propriety search engine comes into play in Win10. I don't know how Bling behaves outside of Win10, I never use it. I would be surprised if it was different. After all Google does the same and so do all the others, but at least you have a choice of using them or not. Not like something built right into your OS. Linux MINT UPGRADE
Done a test computer to go through the motions and I think I have averted a Win 10 forced upgrade.
Linux Mint install, ( wipe out all old stuff, xp etc re-format drive). Internet: Telstra USB stick. This means, a laptop at least can be portable. Much is DIY, Can be done in less than 1 hour once one gets hang of it, ( not including time spend to research ) |
