View Full Version : Congratulations To Stewards

It's not often they get the recognition for their toils in a very demanding industry but let me congratulate the officials for "sticking to their guns" and alerting the racing public to a change of tactics in upcoming races.
eg. in the upcoming race in Sydney, stewards have alerted punters that Mosso, is to be ridden off the pace. It is another tool to assist punters in their final decision. It may not be punters' "nirvana" but it is much appreciated.
As Mr Murrihy stated in yesterday's press, that it was vital to alert punters of such changes so they keep faith in the racing game. "If those punters lose confidence in the races, we'll have no industry at all."
Once again, salutations to the "tuned-in" officials.
Cheers

As I said in my post, this information does not "guarantee" success with Mosso running down the track.
However, in the longrun, it should be a useful tool to be utilised by punters.
Was the run of Orange County disappointing? Not necessarily if you listened to the comments of it's trainer this morning....whilst not giving a "go slow" warning about this runner, he indicated that it had been in the paddock for the last two weeks and would derive great benefit from it's hit-out today.
Cheers.

SR4 today(26.7.06-2:47p.m.EST) I was on Kilcornan which unfortunately struck it's head on the barrier and after a vet's examination was withdrawn. Frustrating?...yes!...but, I commend the stewards for protecting punters' interests. In my case, this action has protected my funds which I will reinvest later in the program. As I have said repeatedly...."when in doubt...take out!"
Congratulations to the stewards...keep up the good work!
Cheers.

I heard a comment from a person who is well and truly beyond his "use-by" date that Stewards should not have access to jockeys' telephone records in the days leading up to racedate.
As pointed out to him, this is common practice in Hong Kong and why shouldn't it become common practice here to ensure the 'integrity of racing."
Keep up the good work officials!
Cheers.

I have been closely following the unfolding of several recent steward's inquiries and wish to express my admiration for the impeccable manner in which the officials have addressed the issues, reviewed relevant evidence and made decisions which can only be seen as fair in the circumstances.
The interests of the betting public are of supreme importance and these "guardians of integrity" are to be encouraged and admired.
For a job which rarely receives many accolades let me, for one, congratulate you in your endeavours and keep up the good work!
Cheers.

As I have highlighted in this thread, the punting public owes a lot of gratitude to the Stewards, principally in Melbourne and Sydney.
However, the job is not done!...........there are still many instances of jockeys who appear to(how shall we say it.......?) not always ride their mount(s) out fully to the line.
Remain vigilant because without the scrutiny of these "integrity police" where would we, ie. the betting public be?
I can answer that question myself....we would be up that proverbial creek without a paddle!
In closing, Newcastle R4 today, several horses were inspected at the barrier and some were withdrawn. One of the inspected horses was declared fit to run...that horse being Onion which duly finished strongly to run third paying $1.5plNSW. While I am of the belief that "when in doubt....they are out" I respect the officials' determination on this occasion.
Cheers.

I normally have nothing but the utmost respect for racing officials but in a recent interview one official explained the change of riding tactics as alerted by connections.
Apparently the connections stated that they would go forward but in actual fact....due to "unforseen circumstances" they went back!
No enquiry....nothing....they just accepted the connections' explanation that they were "victims of circumstances!"
I ask you....what value are the hyped speed charts? Where is the appreciation of public confidence!
After this episode they mean nothing!
Are there any other form students who may feel that this episode warrants further discussion?
I look forward to your opinions.
Cheers.

SR1,
I backed both:
2 Somethin' Leicajem WON $3.7w$1.7plNSW
4 Judged(scr)
after apparently injuring itself at the barrier, Judged was subsequently scratched and my other horse won although there was a fall in the race and we may hear more.
However, I have nothing but praise for the stewards in scratching Judged:
as I always say-"when in doubt......take 'em out!"
Cheers.

There have been two late scratchings at Randwick today:
SR8 3 Oakland Lad(fav)
SR9 16 Lang(well supported)
I am sure that punters who had backed these runners would have been disappointed and groaned when they were withdrawn but I have nothing but praise for the officials who made these decisions.
Sure, it is frustrating to the punters but it is a lot better than supporting a runner which may have no realistic chance of winning/placing.
Both were injured in the barrier stalls and if allowed to run their supporters may have done their money "cold."
As I always say: "when in doubt....take them out!"
Thereby protecting punters' betting banks allowing them to invest on other races on the program.
Good luck to the stewards....keep up the good work!
Cheers.

I must commend the Steward's panel for the professional and exemplary manner in which they have addressed the current EI crisis. Particular mention should also be made to Greg Radley(2KY) and the ubiquitous Andrew Bensley(Racing Radio and Skychannel) for their efforts in this exhaustive and herculean task in keeping the general public and racing participants up to date with this scourge which has threatened the viability of the horse-racing industry and the livelihoods of nearly 50,000workers.
Job well done and good luck to you!
Cheers.

Let's face it....
Our racing officials have proved themselves up to the task and they should be commended for their efforts.
Job well done so far.....although...it isn't over yet!
Any other supporting comments out there...please contribute!
Cheers.

MR3 today, the "hot" favourite, Muzza's Star, became "cast" in the barrier stalls and after an inspection by stewards was duly withdrawn.
The commentator reflected after the race that officials: "are damned if they do and damned if they don't(meaning scratching short-priced runners which are suspected of being injured)."
Well, I have nothing but commendation for the stewards!
Sure, it is inconvenient....sure, the betting market is in upheaval....but....the punters' interests have been protected and they survive to bet later on today's program instead of potentially doing their money "cold."
"When in doubt...take 'em out!"
Job well done by the officials.
Cheers.

Warrnambool R4,
I backed two runners in this race: 3 Karimabad(fav.) and 11 Sir Walter.
Karimabad was injured at the barriers and was subsequently scratched and Sir Walter was just beaten for 3rd place.
However, I have nothing but congratulations for the stewards who made the correct decision and scratched Karimabad even though it was a well-fancied favourite.
Job well done and restores faith in an industry currently reeling from one crisis to another. By protecting punters' interests the officials have ensured the betting public will wager confidently into the future.
As per my adage: "when in doubt....take them out!"
Cheers.

Launceston R7,
well-fancied runner Britomart was scratched at the barrier and it was possibly a very courageous/controversial decision by the officials but I support their decision wholeheartedly!
"When in doubt.......take them out!"
Sure, some disgruntled punters will whinge/disagree....but they will still have their money to invest later on instead of possibly "doing their money cold!"
Congratulations to the stewards!
I know that the general betting public support the stewards' decision unreservedly!
Cheers.

SR3,
5 Euro Chic 2nd $4.2plNSW
this horse played up badly at the barriers and was given a cursory inspection by officials and allowed to start and I won on the race.
However, I reiterate my contention that at the barrier..."if there is any doubt...take it out!"
TIP:
SR5 1
get on....!
Cheers.

MR3 I was on Nos. 1 & 10 but at the barrier No. 1 Almoneef became "cast" and after a steward's inspection was duly withdrawn(No. 10 duly won).
Although it was favourite I commend the officials for their action.
"When in doubt...take them out!"
Cheers.

Now come on:
MR4,
the video clearly showed No.5 Going Spending interfering with No.6 Spot The Line and appearing to "take the running" of No.2 Snappy Tom(3rd)...we'll see what unfolds.
NB. Even if connections of the place-getters do not lodge a protest the stewards are empowered to do so on their behalf.
I am looking for consistency here as I forlornly remember the Takeover Target fiasco(in Sydney) last year when he lost a "Black Type" race on protest for purportedly taking the running of another horse.
I just heard a protest 3rd vs 1st has been lodged(sht 1/2hd, 3/4len).
I am looking for consistency here.
Well, I/we didn't get it did we...and I personally am furious with this decision!
They are fair dinkum kidding because the only consistency of the officials is their very own inconsistency!
I suppose it all matters whether the incidents occur in Sydney or Melbourne.
It also appears that certain riders in Melbourne are "Koala Bears...!"
The long-suffering betting public is truly sick of this...!

SR4,
I am totally sick of this......!!!
No.2 Hip Hop Dancer needed to be replated at the barriers,
and what happened...it ran unplaced...!!!!
When are these stewards going to get the message....."when in doubt...take them out.....!"
The punting public is sick of this anomaly, especially as the TAB will not allow the punter to cancel their bet.....!!!!!
NSW Racing is in crisis and many of the punting public doubt if they....ie. mgt.. have the expertise/judgment to deal with important issues...!
Please, a clean broom to clear this current quagmire of "indulgence!"
The long-suffering betting public will not tolerate this "rubbish" for too much longer....!!!!

how many long shot winners have the blinkers off for the first time this preparation. remember sirmione and efficient last year makes it hard to follow any form when this occurs.
i wonder if any has records of the number of times this type of thing occurs.

I must admit that at today's Newcastle meeting I truly believe the officials "went missing."
Some of the races were more akin to rodeo events with horses rolling around like a pinball machine.
Some well supported runners were literally "knocked-out" of calculations and played no further part in the respective finishes.
I must say that imo a rating of < 2 out of 5 would be my assessment.
So, where does that leave we punters......?
I'll answer that myself: "Up the proverbial creek without a paddle....!"
We need a new broom.......!
Cheers.

No congratulations...only seeking explanations.......!!!
MR4,
Result:
No.2 Mrs Waters WON $10.5w$3.7plNSW
Ridden by Noel Callow(only ride for the day) was allowed to create an unassailable lead into the straight by other supposedly "competent" riders.
Although weakening, it had enough lead to win and imo an enquiry should be held to ask all the other hoops in the race why they allowed this result to unfold.....!!!!
Cheers.

2nd September 2009, 03:48 PM
SR5,
Surely the Stewards must acknowledge a pattern emerging here....why is there a prevalence of favourites missing the start and playing no further part in the race due to hard riding to catch up to the field or being forced wide.....?
Come on.....they are "fair dinkum" kidding...how is it that the betting public can see this pattern but those entrusted to protect "the punter" cannot....?
They get on the radio and give glib responses to questions regarding some inglorious runs and imo are very quickly losing the confidence of the racing/betting public who pay their wages.....!!!!
Cheers.

MR2,
No.2 Carbonel definitely took the running of the favourite, "On Your Mark" when it shifted in and "squeezed" the favourite which ran 4th.
Even if the rider of "On Your Mark" ie. Michael Rodd, doesn't protest then in the name of consistency, the stewards should lodge a protest on his behalf.
Who can forget the "Takeover Target" fiasco some time ago when the "people's champ" had a race taken from it due to these very circumstances.
We will watch and note what unfolds.
Cheers.

Result: No.1 Freudian unp; No.3 Nicolai 3rd $1.5plNSW*
*tried to lead all the way but was swamped in the last 100m.
Sorry...my mistake...this thread should be in the "Smart Punting" thread.

SR7,
Come on stewards...do your job and hold an inquiry into the ride on Atelier!
How was it that a "top" jockey couldn't devise a better plan other than racing 5-6 wide all the way....then faded to finish a long, long last...?
No wonder punters are abandoning Sydney racing to seek better wagering options.....! Give the punters a go.........!!! It is entirely "in your lap....!"
You're kidding.......!!!
Also, what about the plethora of favoured runners "mysteriously" missing the start presently.....?
The sooner an ICAC officer is appointed to oversee Sydney racing the better.......! ie. He/she is in charge and the stewards report to him/her...!

31st March 2010, 09:27 PM
Further to my comments in the previous post, it always concerns me to hear stewards referring to jockeys by their "nicknames."
Imo they should remain totally detached and refer to jockeys by their official names.
Is anyone else similarly concerned.....?
DISCLAIMER:
In no way am I suggesting anything untoward but merely outlining my heartfelt concerns as a member of the wagering public.
Cheers.

Hawkesbury:
SR7:
There were four late scratchings in this race and I personally congratulate the Stewards for their bravery and professionalism for taking this "drastic" action...!
Sure, it was inconvenient but much, much better than "doing my rrrr" wagering upon a runner which may have been injured in the fracas prior to race-start....!
These officials have protected the interests of the wagering public and should receive well-deserved accolades for their forthright action....!
As I have been saying for years now...."when in doubt...take 'em out....!"
Cheers.

No congratulations....only brickbats......!
If the Stewards("the guardians of the betting public"), do not act on the happenings in a Sydney race today then the longterm revenue growth, so "treasured" by the officials will suffer a major setback!
Why......because the betting public is quickly losing patience/confidence in the manner in which racing is administered in this "lame" state of NSW!
Do your job gentlemen!
