Just a wee bit earlier than planned umrum but that's cool

I'll just have to transfer some current stuff over from the old thread.

Track slow Belmont today. No scratchings Goodwood.

Just curious and wondered if others had thoughts. I don't follow perth racing closely but because nearly all perth racing is on good tracks is it hard to get a good form line on horses on inferior going.
My thinking being there may be good opportunity to bet wide and lob some big trifectas?
P.S Well done Paddy, iv'e been on these sites about 2 weeks and you do a great job helping out all the punters. Thanks mate

Sandgroper
21st August 2004, 09:58 AM
I very seldom bet when the track is worse than dead over here mug punta. Unless I have a very clearly rated top commodity, in a good class race. And even then I will look back through the form and review any wet'ish track performances.

There’s always another investment opportunity around the corner.

Reports are that Northerly is only a 50-50 chance to start in Saturday's Farnley Stakes.

Wet tracks over here have put his preparation behind schedule.

A start in Cox Plate is looking more unlikely by the day.

At least half a dozen genuine chances at first glance.

Priceless Matt could make it a Coolgardie Cup / Boulder Cup double. Ran a close 2nd last year in this race behind Space Age who started at cricket score odds.

Others who performed well in this race last year include Mr Guilty and Morocco Bound.

Recent arrival from Vic, Sir Bollinger about ready to show some form. Well backed first visit late last year but failed dismally in the group3 RJ Peters Stakes.

Blevvo back in form, step up in distance in his favour.

Beaten Coolgardie Cup (1600m) fav Ca Cao will also appreciate the extra distance. Likewise My Thornbird and Field Commander who were also well fancied in the same race.

And there are a few others in with a good chance.

Hopefully some good value to be found.

A couple of horses who finished behind Mr. Tambourineman in the Darwin Cup recently, have returned home and race in the Balaklava Cup this Wed. Capo Del Opo and Pray In Vain.

On their Darwin efforts Capo Del Opo looks to have the edge but Pray In Vain has started twice at Balaklava for a win and place. Both look nicely weighted.

Last time Blevvo won in a preparation he went on to win 6 of 7 next starts. Beat Constantinople last start that horse winning since. Does look well in partypooper.

Also like Priceless Matt. Fred has got him back to his best at the right time.

My Thornbird looks well in on the limit & although the form guide says 10 of 16 last start only beaten 3.25lens after getting back too far early on.

Nothing wrong with Changing Lanes form. Only beaten a neck by Priceless Matt last start in the Coolgardie Cup & meets PM 1/2 kg better in this.

Know how you feel Sandgroper - hope the track is OK, but there is some rain predicted for the weekend.

WATC handicapper has said that Northerly could expect no less than 64kg for next Saturday's welter.

The last horse to carry that sort of weight (and win) was Detonator who carried 65kg to victory in a Belmont welter way back in 1978.

Subsequent to his trial run Northerly has had a hard hit at Belmont. Reported Fred pleased with the gallop.

Not done the form yet but has to be huge ask for Northerly to win, which I wouldn't think is Fred's intention. Might be good value race though, with no doubt sentimental money going onto the champ.

Great to see a WA thread, keep up the good work guys. Just moved over from Sydney a couple of months ago. Love a punt, just a hobby, have a lot of fun. Over time most likely losing but that’s entertainment! So intend to tune-in and provide my input here and there (if you don’t mind). From what I seen on this thread and the whopper over the page, I’m sure I’ll get plenty of food for thought. Cheers.

Northerly has a problem with winning races in WA these days, especially when good horses are getting a smeg load less weight, expect a solid run midfield somewhere, best finish probably 5th or 6th

But thats not to say this little black duck wont be willing him past the post in pole position of course

Good luck to Fred (and his family), certainly has put a lot into harness racing over many years.

Apparently they got him over to Melbourne on the pretence someone else was being inducted & he was just a guest for the ‘pretend’ induction.

He's going to be backed by the public even if he rolls out there in a wheelchair so they'll be value in other runners in the race..and if he wins it'll be the first time ever i won't be all that upset about losing my money

WOW. I'm used to traveling around Europe following my soccer team, but I had know idea people would turn out to see a horse in the way I saw Saturday at Belmont, Their was even "Go Northerly" T-shirts and caps for sell. What a great day.

Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing! In an effort to improve my strike rate I’ve just started analysing any ‘good field’ race result where I’ve been way off the mark with my predictions. I am hoping this will broaden my understanding of what to watch out for, when doing pre-race form.

For example, didn’t even look at Violent Wind in the Cup but looking back over the form now, did have a good EW show. In between country stints back in March, had 4 starts at Ascot over middle distance, beaten (in order of starts) 1.25L, HD, 1.75L and 1.25L

Then if you look at last 2 starts prior to the Cup, ran last of 16 (1600m) beaten 5.75L but “raced wide from the 700m” then ran 6th in the Boulder Cup (1760m) beaten 3.5L but again “raced wide from 800m crowded and bumped concluding stages.”

Do similar when a horse performs well above expected rating either winning or finishing close to winner. Keep a bit of a scenario snapshot in case there is some pattern I'm not accounting for. Also observe very closely next couple of starts. Doesn't happen a lot, and where there doesn't appear to be any valid reason for the sharp improvement, around 80% of the candidates never reach that level again, which does make you wonder a bit.

Anyway, Pat Carbery to ride the champ on Sunday, Greg Childs booked for the Cox.

Lightly raced 4YO Siesta Bay was a surprise travelling companion with Northerly. Little bit disappointing last preparation, thought he won with a bit up the sleeve on Saturday - I've rated the run just 1.5 lengths below his very best performance, so does looks promising for a good campaign this time around.

Siesta Bay hasn’t gone well first-up before Saturday’s run. Was a bit hesitant to back him myself but there was good money for him, so I followed suit. Judging by the run and your rating Sandgroper, he is obviously more forward than previous preparations. Let’s hope a decent price on his eastern states debut cause if he does well, we’ll probably not get those odds again.

Carnarvon Cup thoughts.

Party Boy could easily lead them all the way. 5 starts from a spell all up north, should be ready to show best.

The consistent Optimizer is lightly raced and looks well in at the weights. If can handle the step up in distance would be a strong show.

Co Striker has some reasonable recent city form and won the Newman Cup easily last start with dashing dan aboard. Good chance.

Mirror Moon was subject of a stewards inquiry last start after performing poorly at Carnarvon. Before that won the Broome Cup and then ran 2nd in the Onslow Cup. Can't leave out.

I read, think it was the west australian,on the w.a tab site in an article that Fred Kearsley said that Northerly definately would need the run on sunday and that he should be spot on for yallumba 3 weeks later and the cox plate 2 weks after that. Has anything changed since the run yesterday,i thought his run was okay and he only started to weaken the last little bit and will strip pretty fit next run, couldnt believe people would want to back him yesterday though,he had next to no chance of running a place.

20th September 2004, 06:15 PM
What do others think about Northerly making the Melbourne Cup his target. Fred would have more time to get him right, and it's the main race he hasn't won yet. I guess the Yalumba will tell all, they'll have to get him rolling more forward or even lead.

You're right goldmember, the Yalumba (Oct 9th) was reported to be Northerly's next start but now reports out of Melbourne are saying it will be the Turnbull Stakes (Oct 2nd). Perhaps Fred feels an earlier backup more advantageous.

(8) Halogen Miss - great win this course and distance last start. Can go on with it.

(2) Glitzy Show - First ever win was at this course. Last couple of runs in the city good. Capable on her day.

(4) Konjo - Has run a few places this course. Not a bad run last start at Belmont. Capable of leading all the way.

(9) Kilroe - Should be nice EW odds. Had excuses when beaten by Halogen Miss 2 starts ago. Meets that horse 1.5kg better.

Good to see the Fred Kersley trained Tennilla break her maiden status (at her 28th start) on Monday. Being a maiden didn't deter her backers - opened around $12 on the tote for a final dividend of $7.40. IMO capable of going on with it.

Royal Fire does look better than these on best form, but some question-mark first-up. Did win a recent barrier trial which is a plus.

Outside that horse, very open, so Secret Remedy not without a chance Paddy.

I tossed up between Kaprats and Kames Hope yesterday and ofcourse I went with the Fish on Kames Hope close but not quite.

I don't mind the look of maybe Konjo and Advenurer E/W in the Cup

You western folk have gone very quiet lately, I suppose you're just resting up for your big carnival which is just around the corner

Not sure about the rest of the bunch Paddy, but my visits to this forum are becoming less frequent - a lot more negativity than normal imo.

As for our carnival, bring it on and looking forward to it!

Hi sandgroper, as a keen WA fan from the gold coast, I enjoy your and other wa posts.

Don't let some negative hicks stop you from giving your opinion mate.

Keep up good efforts

On the subject of the Ascot summer carnival, there's a new format this year for 4 of the most popular race dates of the carnival, condensing these into a week-long timeframe as follows:

Saturday, December 4 - Railway Stakes.
Wednesday, December 8 – Listed Jungle Dawn Classic.
Saturday, December 11 - Colonel Reeves Stakes.
Sunday, December 12 - Fruit ‘n’ Veg Stakes.

Going to be a great week!

PS. Thanks JF.

I'm not happy with sunday meeting and having the jungle dawn on the wednesday meeting is a pain.

From an interstate trainers perspective might find the new format attractive.
Could potentially bring over a few horses, aimed at a number of feature races, all happening over a short period.
