Hi,

Is it true that with Bookmakers, when you bet at a particular tote price it stays at that price if you win, even though the tote price may rise or fall before (and during) the race?

Also, what are some good Bookmakers out there? Preferably, one which I can sign up over the Internet. I've been to Darwin All Sports but I'm not quite sure about them taking 5% of the profit? I'm in Queensland by the way.

Thanx for your information.

On course bookmakers can only accept phone bets of $150+ in Victoria and higher in NSW - not sure about QLD. The Vics are coming down to $50 within a couple of years.
The 5% take on top fluctuation bets by Mark Read's organisation is a rip-off and has to be avoided. There is another crowd that are based in NT that used to be in Vanuatu - they used to be called Number One betting shop but have now changed to something else - a good net search ought to find them. They will give you top fluctuation without taking a slice on a $50 minimum wager.

So with all Bookmakers is there a minimum bet like TAB at $1.00 (or $5.00 for DAS)?

Hammers - Minor point but I think you will find the minimum phone bet for Melbourne bookies is now $100 on metro meetings and no fixed minimum on country meetings (this is the legislated minimum - of course individual bookies may have their own minimums).

I have had a few dealings with Rod Cleary (you can find him on the net at VICBET.COM) and found him to be quite good.

I have also heard a rumour that a new bookmakers website will be coming on line in the next few weeks but don't have any other details yet.

becareful,
Small world; I have an account with Cleary too - excellent service.
I didn't know the min was down to 100 - will be 50 in the next year or two. They are light years ahead in Vic on the bookie front.
Rod tells me that pretty soon they will be able to publish their prices live on the net during a meeting and accept bets that way as well - just like being at the track.
I can't believe there is a bookie left standing in Sydney with all the garbage they put up with from Face, Carr and the rest of the no brainers in State Parliament.
Cheers.

The Number One Betting Shop was bought out by Sportingbet. Their Australian website is at http://www.sportingbet.com.au

Their main products are a top fluc service (for which they don't charge) and what they call Best Odds. Basically if you nominate best odds, you get SP or Tote, whichever is the higher price when they jump. You have to nominate which state's TAB you want to use in comparison to the SP. If you don't nominate, then you get VIC Supertab.

The drawback with their top fluc service is that you have to place your bets before noon. I believe Cleary offers top fluc up to 30 minutes before race time.

Boodu, as far as I know, there's no way of setting a fixed TAB price with a bookmaker. If you place a bet with a bookie and you nominate TAB odds, then you get the TAB official dividend, not the price the horse was when you placed the bet. I guess that's the advantage of fixed price betting.

Betting on the TAB is like a box of chocolates (to coin a phrase). You never know what you're going to get.

So what you are saying Reenster is that if I nominate TAB odds through a Bookmaker, they will pay TAB dividends but if I don't nominate TAB odds, they will pay fixed price?

No, you get a choice of which product you want to use. If you ring and place a bet with a bookie, they'll usually ask how you want the bet to be placed (if they offer more than one way).

You can accept the fixed price they quote about a horse then and there (markets are usually opened about 20 minutes before each race) or you can choose to bet at TAB odds on any tote (not available with all bookies) or as with Sportingbet you can choose best odds which gives you the higher price of SP or TAB at the jump.

If you want to bet top fluc, you have to place your bet before noon (with Sportingbet or IAS etc).

But you have to nominate how your bet is to be wagered.

IAS have different products which have been discussed by others in different posts.

Cheers
