Ipswich Races Saturday...
Hey all,
I have to post these easrly becauyse i'm busy tonight and tomorrow morning. It looks a good enough meeting at Ipswich tomorrow, with a couple of promising types. Big fields are the order of the day (again), so the speed shouldn't be a problem. Backmarkers can find it difficult around Ipswich though, with the shortish straight and the fact that they have to set off on their runs early. Race 1 - Pretty ordinary one to start on. King of Soul meets the easiest field hes likely to see in a while and gets in with no weight. If he can't get away with this, then its time to give up on him. Celtic Trial has been around the mark lately, and the run behind Cog Hill last time has been made to look a little better by that horse (having said that, he was beaten 7.5 lengths...). In this type of field, he might be able to run a race. I think its about time Parameter showed something too. If he can lead this race, i've seen him beat better fields. The last run probably topped his fitness off and i wouldn't be at all surprised if he went well tomorrow. Race 2 - I've got a problem with horses that don't win, and so i've gone around Miss Mooney Mooney. Shes clearly the class galloper, but i'd rather see her win one first - especially given the price that they'll be betting. I've settled on Spur Me On. There is heaps of pace, which won't help and he usually gets better after one or two runs, but he is a really fast galloper and if Colless can cross on him, he can pull off some fast sectionals and get away with this. A Little Naughty will benefit from this easier class and the extra 100m. She was never going to beat Starlactic last week...but this lot, she can beat. Good chance. Miss Mooney Mooney for 3rd because she is class and probably won't miss a place. These wouldn't get within 100 yards of Virage de Fortune so she has to be inlcluded on that alone. Race 3 - Pretty tough 2yo race this. Leondari On Ice has to be given a huge chance after drawing the alley when most of the other fancies have drawn wide. It was a good run last time behind Go Sequalo and that should top him off for this race. Nice chance. Cocktail Supreme has form behind Go Sequalo also, and streaked home last time at Ipswich. Has obvious ability and can figure in the placings tomorrow if he has some luck from the bad gate. Cole Trickle hasn't been handed nay favours with the weight i didn't think, but he has got nice ability and won't be far off them from the 5 gate. $13 in the paper is overs, doubt you'll get that tomorrow....if I saw it, i'd be taking it. Race 4 - Now for the difficult 3yo race. These races are always good events and although the quality may not be all there for this one, they appear to be an even bunch. I've settled on Muscle Up. I've been waiting for this bloke to get to town. Hes been running some great figures around the provincials and deserves his chance here. The alley is terrible but i'm hoping he can get some luck somewhere along the way and not be posted 3 deep. If he gets in, i give him a good chance. If not, he is still one for the future. Dulacca Diva was the forgotten horse last time paying $22 odd on the tote. She is a nice chance tomorrow again, but she is creeping up in the weights. She may just be stopped in her tracks with 57.5kgs but i'll leave her in for 2nd. One at the bottom that might sneak a place in the field is Mister Mustang. Has been running some OK races around Toowoomba and gets his chance in a good race in town. Good place chance at big odds. Race 5 - First of the main races, the one for fillies and mares. Its a raffle. Maybe Hasta La Ciao Ciao can improve with the tongue tie on. Got her tongue over the bit last time which i assume was the reason for the bad performance and back to this easier grade, i think she can show big improvement. Nice chance at better than E/W odds. Serenote is not suited at this track but she has been building to a win, with some nice efforts in good company at her last few runs. She has shown really nice ability in the past and if there is enough speed on she gets her chance. Charlie Cheese at the bottom appears way out of her depth but i've got a bit of time for her trainer, so i'll be keeping a very close watch on her. Race 6 - Not a bad race the Eye Liner. Bit of speed in this one too, with Impaler, Sir Brekky, Shysu and Myabe Century Serb being thereabouts near the lead. I've settled on Diamonds and Chalk. Will probably get back a fair way, but with some nice speed on up front i think he can get home late. Top Marc is ready for a good run i think. From what i hear he didn't get a go at them last time (I didn't see the run) and so if they press forward a bit, and he gets a run at the top of the straight....he might be one at odds with a chance. Impaler meets a much weaker field than he did last time in the 10000. It was a top run and if he can reproduce something like that figure, he'll be mighty tough to stop tomorrow. Race 7 - Like Sphenophyta. The trainer thinks he'll be primed for the Sunshine Coast race from memory, but i think he can get away with this on raw talent. These aren't a great bunch, so if this bloke is anywhere near right....i think he can win it. Cold Start will get out infront again and can give them all something to catch. Ipswich will probably suit him too. Maybe he can do what Mowerman did a number of years back? Similar odds . Precise Timing is a solid performer who always seems to be around the mark in these sort of races and can be there again tomorrow...i just don't like backing horses with big weights in staying events. Race 8 - Pretty awful race really. I like Tsolias as a horse, but hes got the shocking alley. I'll go for him anways as it saves from from picking another one . He has run good races his last 3 and if he can get a softish run with some speed on, i think he can go close. Ears to Victory will be up near the speed and can kick on in this sort of event. If in doubt in these staying events, i tend to err on the side of John Collins . Sea Drive has shown ability in and around the place. Hes not the easiest horse to follow but can run well tomorrow in this standard of race. Overall, a pretty good days racing. My best are Leondari On Ice, Hasta La Ciao Ciao and Sphenophyta with a eachway chances to Charlie Cheese and Top Marc. Good luck all, Sven |

Hi Sven...looks a good day tomorrow..really like a few at value..
I'm in a hurry..going to the Broncos match tonight ...not a fan but have free tickets Race 1. King of Soul was on the wrong part of the track last start..has the good barrier so should take the sit again... and should be winning this comfortably,, the price is the only worry..a couple of leaders here in Aerosol and Danefull can give alot of cheek with first use of the track,, cant find anything to beat King of soul ..looks like i'll be on if the price is right..hopefully a roughie gets up in the placings.. Race 2. A little Naughty dissapointing last start but again has the good barrier so tomorrow it will be of actual benefit.especially around this track,,,i dont mind Sir Monashee this horse is a flyer and puts himself in the race...i'll be working tris around these but i should get juicy e/ws about Sir Monashee..,,,Persuades is another who battled on well last start..races better 2nd up and a good place chance..Miss Mooney Mooney the obvious class but i like taking on these southerners.. Sir Monashee e/w Race 3. I really like this Seemaqualo ,,the horse runs around a bit but is improving with each run has the benefit of Colless whos a master around this track and with these types of horses..,,...Leandari on Ice was good last start but did have the benefit of racing in the better part of the track,,Cocktail Supreme shown ability..won easing down last start and worth keeping safe.. Race 4. Another at odds...Cocolare has been racing well,,good run behind Bitabiff last start and shes had the freshen which will suit,,also the gun jock, won at the track and distance winner..gets alot ticks.. Bold Reason is a huge show here,,from the good barrier should be in the box seat and will be hard to catch...Becks Crown with the underated Forester on board a good show.... Coccolare at odds...and if the odds are right Bold Reason should be backed,, Race 5. Readyforcatherine with the wide barrier still rates on top for me...she's a very good horse and this doesnt seem a strong race for mind,,Colless is the clincher...like the 7's in paper...Freeroller the obvious danger (a good exacta) Romare and Really Flying great place chances.. Race 6. Shysu was outstanding last start,,,i like him alot here...Impaler obviously hard to beat but hes a bit to inconsistant for me,,,but if they leave him alone up front he wins...Classiconi to good to leave out...San Fransisco has earnt his way into this field and from the good barrier will be right in this...and the big weight drop and jock helps Panzer sneak into the ratings.. Shysu on top ...has shown he can he race anywhere of late,,this will help in this race,,,,the others mentioned for the placings.. Race 7. Douro Valley the obvious...doubt a price but you just never know...Hello Possums is just flying at the moment and will be right in this from the good barrier......might be the better e/w if theres no value around for Douro VAlley Race 8. I'm all over Clang Edition here..should have won by lengths last start...gets the better jockey on here and you'll see him winnning this easily..Oh Raw Oh Raw surpisingly rates high..keep him safe.. Best Bets. King Of Soul, Readyforcatherine, Shysu, Duror Valley, Clang edition Best e/w's. Sir Monashee, Cocolare, Seemaqualo Alot of value in some of these,,,but i'm still feeling confident...scary |

Hey Sven, I don't know if you've had a look at the Just Racing website tonight, but Phil's article really backs up your feeling on Miss Mooney Mooney.
Was on SPHENOPHYTA last start, just find it hard to get confident about anything at Ipswich. Hope there is some pace on! |

Hey Freek,
I did have a look just then at that site. Ive found its better to agree with Phil than to disagree so thats heartening. From what i've heard about Sphenophyta, he should be too classy for these. Theyre not chop from my reading and if he is to be a genuine chance in the Caloundra Cup, he should beat them easily. Sven |

Not a bad days racing by the looks of it but it is always tought these big days at Ipswich it is a funny track really it is surprising where horses can come from to win at the track considering it's lay out especially on these big days.
Race 1: King of Soul looks obvious but he could have some chinks in his armour certainly not a strong race but I didn't like the wya he went to the line the other day, Thee Auld Hussie isn't a bad horse but she will need some miracles here after that Darkside Lass might be a place show at decent odds. No bet because I doubt the odds will be good enough to bother. Race 2: Not a fan at all of this one before last start A Little Naughty would have been an obvious pick but that run was absolutely pitiful, After that I thought Persuades was an enormous chance can go forward and might prove hard to run down when they straighten, Miss Mooney Mooney obviously picks herself never been on the track this prep but the odds will be terrible and she doesn't like to win at all, there was a roughie I thought could run a bit of a race and that was Fuhr Goodness Sake good fresh record and has run some decent races behind some good horses. Will probably back Persuades as long as the rest of the country doesn't jump on aswell and might look at Fuhr Goodness Sake e/w to Race 3: I have always liked Cole Trickle and although he doesn't look well weighted he will be fully fit now and should get a nice run from a good gate with a very good jockey on board in "Stubbie" Holder I really think he is goind to be extremely hard to beat, I don't mind the 1st starter Created in a good stable and has had a few trials to get ready for this and run nicely in them aswell would be surprised if it doesn't run well. Will back Cole Trickle here really like him. Race 4: I think there is a horse here dying for a dry track and it might be good odds Upsized got a couple of nice runs in what have turned out to be pretty good form races in Sydney behind The Free Stater IMO that track last week was worse then dead and I fell that is why the horse was bought up here to get away from the wet in sydney, Coccolare is another I like (think we both did awhile back to Mav) he could be finishing hard in this one and Patillo usually rides this track well not to mention he will be on a high right now, I also would find it hard to rule out Bold Reason drawn to get a great run and will take some running down. I will have something e/w on Upsized if the track is dry then will see what happens after that. Race 5: Mav I agree Readyforcatherine looks really hard to hold out here but that barrier puts me right off her Serenote is the one I think I am going to settle on she might not get as far back as normal and she is all class she was made to go to wide to early last start not badly weighted here and this is her best distance IMO if one thing is for sure she will be fit. just give me decent odds on Serenote and I am on Race 6: I am with Sven here despite and average draw I like the way Top Marc hit the line last start all he needed was some clear running and he goes real close to running in the placings this race is no harder at all already had a bit e/w on him at $35 anyway (cross my fingers and hope for a late deluge about 20 minutes before the race) after that I thought Diamonds and Chalk might be a chance Proudly Agro might improve sharply all at nice odds. Will wait and see here looking for value in this one though. Race 7: I like Duoro Valley he is a solid horse but he is not the sort of horse you want to take anything under 5-1 about he doesn't do himself any favors at all, Do not understimate the toppy very good horse and Robert Thompson will give him every single chance, Sphenophyta looks a horse on the improve with a huge run behind Magic Marvo who certainly franked the form the other day he just might be the better horse after that Aiden James was going well before last start maybe you shouldn't sack him on one run drawn well with a tough old jockey on board might be one at a bit of odds to challenge the others all in all though i feel it is one of the worst Ipswich Cup fields I have seen. Sphenophyta might be the one for me but I will take a long look at the others I have mentioned as well. Race 8: I really like Peaceful Honour here been running on nicely and well drawn here might be good odds to, Clang Edition looks the hardest to beat always gives one hundred percent and I also thought Oh Raw Oh Raw was a chance well named anyway Sea Drive also a chance but a damn hard horse to follow. Best: Cole Trickle, Serenote, Peaceful Honour and Upsized all e/w |

You often get a good laugh at some of Phil Purser's race rundowns. I agree with him about the Cup. A class shocker [as is the Brisbane cup which should be a G3] with only 3 runners above the min. weight. The miss Mooney Mooney story is spot on too. Mooney Mooney will be backed into short favoritism for sure. Can't believe some punters don't bother looking up what a horse HAS won [a weak maiden], not just what it NEARLY won. I'll take A Little Naughty in that race thanks.
Some very descriptive writing about the Cup hopes and I love this example: Quote: " LESTER THUNDERWING Wouldn’t win if it started now. The fact that this horse found his way to Queensland shows us that the government needs to reintroduce border guards at Tweed Heads, as the quarantine people would have stopped the vehicle and said, “have you got any fruit, or Lester Thunderwing’s to declare” – then they could have arrested the transport driver and sent him to Siberia for trying to smuggle “dangerous goods” into Queensland!" Have a good one. |
