Looking at a different angle I'm going to look at some results were a horse has had the best time splits over 600m, 400m, 200m and ran unplaced and backing them next start.

For example Caulfield 4 17/9/11 No 15 Hi Belle.
Had the best splits over the 1400m for 600 / 400 / 200 and was unplaced.
Next race was over 1600m at Bairnsdale on the 25/9 race 6.

It won paying $5.20 on unitab. A good return.

Even Pinnacles ran on the 17th Race 5 over 1400m with the best split over last 200m. Ran 2nd. Then jumped up to SIR RUPERT CLARKE STAKES and ran 2nd again but paid $7.40 a place.

Has anyone else done any sort of testing in relation to time splits and the follow up runs?

I think you're spot on with your analysis there.

Hi Belle ran cracking sectionals over 1400 on Saturday and stepped up to the perfect distance of 1600m midweek. Very well placed and did the right thing.

There a numerous examples of this type of scenario. A recent one that I followed was Ladramahs. He ran fine closing sectionals at Caulfield over 1400m and took 3 more runs to score midweek but he sure won in style and at the respectable price of $6.

This angle is definitely worth pursuing, especially looking to unplaced horses for a little bit of value and if they were unlucky in running, EVEN BETTER.

Where is the best information to get all the sectional times available.
Most sites only listed the winners times. I've got one site that only contains the Melbourne Metro splits

TVN Sectionals

They cover Vic Metro but only have Rosehill and Canterbury in Sydney, though with the merger perhaps this will change?

Just racing say their times are more accurate, I haven't tried them.

Just racing sectionals

They also have them in the midweek Sportsman, which is easier to read.

google "race time sectionals" brings up a few, including those mentioned by The Schmile.

I think you can only get the sectionals on metro tracks due to the technology involved - not sure tho

Hi there Vortech, I used to do something very similar for about 4 years. I used to get the sectionals for all sydney and melbourne racing, copy it onto a spreadsheet and apply various formulas to it. My spreadsheet also had the tempo of the race worked out, and what each horse gained on the winner over the last 600/400/200. I would then enter the ones I liked into a blackbook and follow next start. I had some good results over the years with this, but I have strayed away from this at present. I'm currently working on speed ratings with the data obtained from R&S, giving every horse in the race (after the race) a rating based on lengths finished from the R&S standard time for that track and distance. That is then transported to a data base within the spreadsheet, to be vlooked up when I copy and paste the fields in say for next saturdays sydney meeting.

I was also using ratings (results) from say newcastle, kembla, hawkesbury etc, but I found that they were giving me misleading figures, figures to high for that track. They were rating high i.e. close to the standard time for the track/distance for say newcastle and throwing up high figures when compared against horses who had their last start at say randwick.

Doing a check using the database purchased from this site, revealed that the % of winners on a saturday meeting at sydney who had their last start on a metro track was about double versus those who had their last start on a provincial track.

So I am now discarding those horses. This of course doesnt give me ratings for every horse in the race, but I am trying to see how I can be very chosey and look for standout selections.

Maybe one day I might go back to the sectional times analysis but tell me how your theory goes over the next few weeks,
