I have just received a brochure on Arbitrage and was wondering if any-one has had any experience in making money out of this venture?

Hi Freak,

It works if you are prepared to put the time and effort in or engage the services of an alert system.

I understand that because we are in the land of Oz and that most of the action takes place on the otherside of the globe that it would be necessary to become nocturnal. Also what would be a reasonable return percentage wise and what would be a reasonable turnover in cash? Is there a problem with the time factor and transfering money between bookmakers?

Nocturnal would help

Most of the sports that you'd get the most benefit from following would be ones such as tennis, played all around the globe, all year round and mostly on the other side of the world. The returns i guess would be from about 1% to 15% ( 15% not often )

The main problem you'll find is that you need to set up a number of accounts with bookmakers to be able to capture the opportunity. So, you probably wanna start small, get a feel of which bookies you want to use and go from there. I'm led to believe that there are some alert services that allow you to filter what bookies you want to be included for an arb alert, just so that when you are notified by email i guess ,it won't be a waste when the arb is made up of two Bookies from Russia which you have no dealings with.

Hope this helps, if you need more, email me caus i know a guy that could help you.

A.

From what I have seen it is possible to make money out of it BUT:
1. You need to have a lot of different bookmaker accounts with all the various bookmakers (many overseas).
2. You either need to leave significant amounts of money in these accounts OR you need to transfer large amounts to the accounts you need to use for each opportunity

There are therefore some risk with your money exposed to possible loss if one of the bookies went bust. Also if you have to pay a fee on deposits or withdrawals then that can eat up most of your profit.

The profit margins are quite slim (usually only a couple of percent) so that doesn't leave much for expenses, etc.

Also you need to be aware that with some sports the rules between bookies are different so what seems like a sure thing can end up losing you a lot of money. For example with Tennis different bookies have different rules for voiding bets in the event of a player pulling out of the match injured. In the event of an incomplete match you could find the bookie you backed the "winner" with cancels the bet whilst the other bookie declares a result so you lose your money there.
