Today's selections are:
Strathalbyn R7 no.5 - Snippety Doodah
Strathalbyn R3 no.5 - Highland Jester. This is a Maiden Race and is not a system selection.

Tabcorp selections:
Randwick R4 no.1 - Reconnoitre
Randwick R6 no.1 - Zabarra
Strathalbyn R6 no.2 - Artfulino
Narrogin R7 no.2 - Plea Bargain

One selection for my system:
Strathalbyn R6 no.2 - Artulfino - Place only.

Hello Michael,
It was encouraging to see your Unitab system work 100% today with your first selection winning and paying $3.40c for the win and $1.80c for the place in NSW and your second selection placing, making in 100% placing for maidens so far, even though it only paid $1.04c in NSW and only money-back elsewhere.
Your own system is still doing well with one selection for a second at $1.40c in NSW.
Unfortunately, for me, I gave your selections a miss today and only backed "River to The Sea" in Race 3 Sydney for a win but it only came second. I had strong hunches about 3 horses, but only backed one. The other 2 won. Those 2 were "French Belle" in Adelaide Race 4 and your main Unitab selection, "Snippety Doodah".
I should have backed your 2 Unitab selections and your own system selection plus all my hunches.
Before I started writing this post, I put $10 on your final Tabcorp selection "Plea Bargain" for a win. It runs in about 25 minutes. If it wins I should get my money back plus a bit extra. If it loses, that's just experience.

"Plea Bargain" came in 3rd, for $1.40c on the NSW Tab. I only bet for a win but that's just a bit more experience for me.

Hi, Rebeccian.

Hope you won yesterday. I always bet more on the place than the win. The place bets on the Unitab system are still showing a small profit, the same is true with the Tabcorp system. Some of the place dividends have been pathetic. With the Unitab system commencing 6 April there have been four money-back dividends, and seven $1.10 dividends.

Maybe if/when Tabcorp merges with Tabltd, then there might be better divvies if we are to believe some journalists.

Unfortunately the odds on place betting are terrible unless, of course, you are going for a longer odds horse. If you think it is bad for the gallops then you should take a look at those offered for the dogs...diabolical.

Anyway, if I am interested in a place bet then I always check Betfair or SportOdds (not for the dogs). At least that gives you a couple of options instead of just relying on the TAB.

Hello Michael,
No. I lost $20 yesterday but I still have to figure out the most reliable staking plan for someone like me who only has a small bank to play with. I'm only betting small at the moment and any loss is just part of the learning curve.
P.S. Congratulations on your second at Port Macquarie (in another Maiden). It paid $1.20c on the NSW Tab. I saw your posting about it at lunchtime but when I checked to see if I had time for a bet I discovered that the race was already under way.

Hello Gizzard,
Thanks for your input. You say that you check "Betfair" or "SportOdds" when looking at making a place bet. I also use use SportOdds as well as the TAB but I haven't worked out to make a place only bet with them. As far as I know, it is only possible to make either a win only bet or a win and place together bet (at equal stakes).
Is this what you do - bet a certain number of units with win and place, then bet some more units with win only? This would then give you more units for the win than the place. I've never thought of doing it that way before but it might be worth looking at.
Yet, if there is in fact a way of betting place only with SportOdds I'd grateful if you could tell me how it's done.
Thanks,
Rebeccian

Rebeccian
It is definitely possible as I backed a couple of winners today (and a couple of losers!) to place with SportOdds.
It is not always possible for all races for all courses. I managed to back them at Port Macquarie today and I would think that most of the metro races would be allowed. You have to wait until 20 minutes or so before the race (I don't know the exact time) and then you are offered 2 buttons for each horse, a Win button and a Place button. Hit the Place button and a pop-up window then allows you to enter your bet for Place only.
Give it a go tomorrow.

It will always be difficult to beat the Betfair odds but at least you know they are fixed and that your bet has been taken.

Hello Gizzard,
Thanks for that info on place betting with SportOdds. I'll have to take a closer look at it.
By the way, that idea I came up with of betting a certain amount at even stakes with SportOdds then betting extra with the TAB for the win just would not work because it would only work if the larger amount was put on the place instead.
