Rather grand title isn't it? ;)

You've heard of the NRL, NBL, NFL, NHL. Well, now here's the NPL. It's 16 tipsters going head to head each week over 15 rounds in an effort to reach the final series conducted over the week of the Melbourne Cup carnival, with the champion to be decided on November 11.

RULES

Each week, all tipsters must provide a selection in the designated feature race of the week.
Each Thursday morning, I will post the race of the week on here. Everyone must include a tip for this race, and also a reserve selection in case of scratchings.

Tipsters must then choose 4 more selections from any races in Australia covered by Unitab.
Simply post your four selections, and also please include 2 reserve selections (in order of preference), in case of any scratchings. For these selections, you can use any race meeting in Australia, metro or provincial, providing that it's covered by Unitab. On a couple of weeks, Melbourne metro meetings will be held on Friday or Sunday. You will be able to tip at those meetings too, but otherwise, it's strictly Saturday racing only until we get to the finals. Please make sure to post the venue, race, number and name of each selection to make it easier for me.

Deadline for posting your tips is 1pm Queensland time each Saturday afternoon.
Please make sure you get your tips in by this time. This may seem a little harsh, but it is to stop tipsters from gaining an unfair advantage by posting their tips later than everyone else. And there is no need to make late changes for scratchings, because you will have provided reserve selections.

Points will be awarded to each of your final five selections on the following basis: 20 points for a win, 10 points for 2nd, and 5 points for 3rd. You will also be awarded points on the basis of a $10 win bet on each selection on Unitab.
Here's an example of how the points system works:
Tip 1 - 3rd (5 points)
Tip 2 - unplaced (0 points)
Tip 3 - won (20 points) + dividend $2.30 (23 points)
Tip 4 - 2nd (10 points)
Tip 5 - won (20 points) + dividend $7.50 (75 points)
Total = 153 points
So, you can see that it's pretty easy to work out your score (and your opponent's score) throughout the day. All you need to do is check out the Unitab website or any website that displays their dividends.

Each week, competition points will be awarded on the following basis: 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, 0 points for a loss and a bonus point if you score 150 points or more.
It's pretty simple really. If you score more points than your opponent for the week, then you receive the 4 competition points for winning. It doesn't matter what any of the other 14 tipsters do on the day. You are only competing against one other tipster each week. If 2 tipsters end up level, then it's a draw and they get 2 points each. The bonus point is included as a reward for a great tipping performance. If you score 150 points or more, you get a bonus point, no matter whether you win, lose or draw.

At the end of the 15 preliminary rounds, the top 8 tipsters will go into the final series conducted over the Melbourne Cup carnival.
Again, this is pretty straightforward. Just like the NRL and AFL, the top 8 go through to the finals. If there are any tipsters level on points, then % will be used to split them just as in the AFL. As a reward for finishing higher on the ladder, the higher ranked tipsters will be given "home ground advantage" on the first 3 days of the final series. They will be allowed to make an extra tip. The Grand final will be conducted on Saturday November 11.

Umrum,

There's no requirement to post a best bet in this comp. Also, when I said to post reserve selections, I didn't actually mean that they had to be in the same races as your original top 4 selections. They can be in completely different races.

So, for that reason, I'll give the other tipsters every opportunity to tip this week, by forgetting about the 1pm deadline.

I decided to simply use "points for" to separate the tipsters instead of "%" as I think it will be much fairer that way.

Leroy,
I was hoping Evil Master would win for you because I had backed it and tipped it in my 'off the cuff' tips. A very close 2nd.

mate this horse was born to run places....i vowed last year never to back it again and i'm happy....it just can't win

well done rabz got the better of me today despite some blatant cheating - quite saddening actually "excuse me mr sportz i had maybe better so can u give me points for that"

just kidding well done i guess i will have to amend the market now!!! :b

Okay, a bit short on for feature races this week. I thought I'd better leave the jumps racing out of it, and the Dermody Stks seems to be lacking in depth, so although it's not actually a feature race, I've decided to use Melbourne Race 8 as the race of the week this week:

Sportz,

A bit puzzled about the choice of feature race[?] No depth whatsoever here in R8 [Paris zero [odds-on] if 'slow' and Steptoe if it isn't or Coffeeshopblues for a bit of odds].

The Moonee Valley Hurdle is clearly the 'feature race' of the day. Why are we avoiding hurdle races?

Yeah, I thought there might be a complaint or two. :o

It was tough this week, crash! The Hiskens Steeplechase is definitely the biggest race, but I know that many people simply don't like betting or tipping in jumping races. And as for the flat races, there was the listed Dermody Stks in Adelaide, but it looked a bit lacking in depth, and in any case, I really wanted to stick to just Melbourne and Sydney only for the race of the week. Sydney is a very heavy track at the moment, so I went looking for a flat race in Melbourne, and I thought the overall class of the field in Race 8 was the best.

As a general rule, I look at the races that TAB Sportsbet is operating on, because they ONLY operate on feature races or the best quality non-feature races. This Saturday, they're betting on just 2 races, the Dermody Stks and the Austereo Hcp. So there you go.

Thanks. Above all, it's a bit of fun. And it can actually be quite exciting if you follow the tips throughout the day. Raw Instinct got up to beat Stix in the last race, and Panther got up to beat Leroy by just 2 points with the last race as well. Leroy's a bit unlucky. He's scored 145 points, but hasn't registered a win yet. I'm sure he'll get one soon though, and when he does his high points total may help him get into the top 8. Umrum found a $15.70 winner today to claim a bonus point, and Chuck got a bonus point as well. Well done guys.

And silly me, I left out Oloprey, which I was going to tip yesterday. Decided to leave out Sydney because of the track.

Very good win by Panther, because he had a scratching and didn't provide any reserves, so he only had 4 selections instead of 5. And despite that, he managed a bonus point as well.

Very mad at myself for going away from the original selections I worked out yesterday. Today, after much consideration, I switched from Minson to Super Elegant, and left Sydney out because of the track. :(

Looks like Chuck's got my measure today, even if I get a winner in the last. Funny thing is I had a good bet on Starlactic and I didn't know how to feel when it won, as it may have cost me a victory today. :)

I tossed up for ages between Watchyerback and Judusk and went the wrong way now if Ashkabar doesn't win I reckon I might be in trouble because if Alto Adige can't win that race I wouldn't feed him his only danger might be Saarjun and that is stretching it.

I think after Stix's 'little' faux-pas outburst of accusing me of not backing my own tips [I'd tipped a $28 winner on that day] in my thread 'off crash's cuff' ['so don't take any credit for tipping it because I had a ****e day and I don't believe you backed it anyway ...blah .blah.. etc'] and ended the thread because of his post saying 'well I get to kick your **** in the comp next sat. etc.' , he might have pulled the pin on the forum.

Personally I was more amused than outraged by the attack and I would have rather it was forgotten about by both of us as faux-pas happen [I'm pretty good at the foot in the mouth technique myself].

He's a member of 'inside rail' forum, so maybe he is transferring his 'insights' there from now on. He does seem to have dumped the forum and comp. so we might need another punter. I'm sorry to all if my response [aggressive] to his poor taste post was the cause.

I've been waiting on the weather reports and I now think it's good Adl./Bris. and dead Syd., so I'll start looking at the form now.

You made a good choice in the feature I think. A lot of 'blah. blah' around about a few runner's chances like Astounded and Backdraft, but the 'runs on the board' in this class [and above] can only be claimed by a few horses in this and Gold Edition is one of them. any applause for me yet? i gotta win one soon, hell even souths have had 3 wins this season. i have to say i think gold edition deserved the san dominico yesterday. for a 2 year old an absolute model of consistency, nothing brilliant but honest

We do, but Rabbitz has asked for someone to take over his spot. He's lost interest a bit after he achieved his one and only goal of beating Chuck in the very first round. Wascally wabbitz! :)

So you'll be starting on 1 win and 3 losses, but certainly not impossible to make the finals from there.

well if anyone else wants to take over they can

I have found a replacement for you, Rabz.

Leroy

It was a strange day for me on saturday Leroy.
First two bets were seton hill (3rd @ $3.2) and Gold edition ($5.7).
Then got 3 legs of the quadie in Perth and ended up losing for the day : (
Started off great and finished very poorly. Beyond Dispute knocked me out of the Perth quadie and I had Scenic Assault who lost by a head.
