(13) LAETARE is my top tip. Last start ran home strongly beaten 1len over this distance. Drops a massive 6.5kg on that run.

(1) FINITO is my next best. Ran a close 2nd in this race last year (1800M), running on strongly. Put in a shocker last start in the Railway Stakes. Can improve dramatically.

(6) HARDRADA is my third choice. Beaten odds-on favourite (1len) last year in this race. Looks to be a much stronger horse this year.

(12) RIVER MIST my fourth choice. Won the WA Guineas (1600M) is fine style 2 starts back. Not a bad run behind Hardrada in the Railway Stakes. Meets that horse 4.5kg better in this race.

Good luck to all.

Paddy i watched laetare's last two runs and i think he peaked on his run in both of them. I cant see him running 2000metres. I give river n=mist a top e/w hope. Hardrada is a risk over 2000m, he is built like a sprinter but on his railway run he is almost a certainty, he travelled about 1900m in the railway. Finito if right is great value, doubt he'll be 20/1 on the day. Pretty tough race, you have to respect emission, hard to see the rest of them doing any good.

In summation it looks like the class horses either have a query over their form/fitness and/or their ability to run 2000m while the 2000m horses it appears lack the class. It is one tricky race I have to put Hardrada on top from finito then emission and river mist.

superior star, crimson sakura and free at last may be value but all have to rise to the class. Very hard. The pocket rocket corporate bruce is also silly value.

Looking at the current odds, EW Corporate Bruce (40/1) is not as silly as you think umrum. After all he did run 2nd in this race last year beaten only 0.5 length. Kentiara at 50/1 is also another that looks to be over the odds (EW).

you can have whatever you like on kentiara. no danger for mine but stranger things have happened. i.e devil's dance losing and chuka khan winning

Why strange Chucka Khan winning, umrum?

obviously i didnt back it but really it has albany form, many in the race had solid form lines some of them winning formlines like thunderhawk and heavy nova(i backed it). Great ride by Olsen though, I think it was a leaders bias track on the weekend which helped.

The only thing strange about Chucka Khan winning on Saturday was the shortish price

Has not missed a place this preparation, start prior to Sat won a class 5 at Albany by 4 lens, has also won at Northam & been placed at Ascot. Last city start (prior to Sat) had excuses when unplaced behind two handy horses - Constantinople & Celtus.

Still sorting my selections for the Fruit 'n' Veg - the additional 200M (1800M to 2000M) makes it a little more trickier (just ask umrum, he has already tipped over half the field  ) - the majority of starters look to be untried over the distance.

I cant understand the wrap for laetare. River Mist beat him in the guineas by 2 lengths and Laetare peaked on his run, he didnt run the 2000m out last week(he's about 6 lengths better than the horses that beat him over anything up to 1600m). River Mist is the value in this race but I'm sticking with Hardrada and Free at Last.

(12) Polygram looks well in, will be suited by expected fast pace. Drawn out, so should get plenty of running room.

(16) Hot Shot Brother, further improvement expected.

(1) Tribula, doesn't look well weighted but very capable.

(19) Mercury Halo been racing below best, could surprise if gets a start.

there's some very very generous odds for some good horses in the colonel reeves. I like polygram though he had to be floated over rather than flown. Dead eye Dick looks a massive chance on his last run. Irish Pride has to be respected though he is a non winner for mine in these big races.

Reported in the press this morning (the West Australian), that the Perth Cup will be run on New Year's Day at Ascot or not at all.

Belmont is being ruled out as it only has a capacity of about 7,000 compared to Ascot's 40,000.

Test gallops (at Ascot) that had been due to take place yesterday have been postponed until Saturday.

The turf club has reportedly also ruled out racing wider on the track at Ascot with a limited field.

It is very possible that the Cup could be cancelled for the first time in its 116-year history.

CELTUS
HIGGINS GOLD
SHOELESS
GLITZY SHOW

Sandgroper
30th December 2003, 04:40 PM
Higgins Gold – Well beaten in this race last year but is racing currently in the best form of his career. Ran on last start over 2400m to be beaten 0.75 length by Celtus. Meets Celtus 1.5 kg better in this race. More mature stayer now and should acquit himself well. 5/1 in current fixed odds betting.

Celtus – Perth’s stayer of the moment, winning 5 of last 6. Stepped up to 2400m for the first time last start, showing his fighting qualities to stave off all challengers. Should get a good sit throughout. Looks the one to beat, although at 6/4 in current fixed odds betting is well under true odds.

Conspirator – not won beyond 2200m but has been placed over 2400m. Will be ridden by Paul Harvey, so should be given every chance. EW chance at 14/1 in current fixed odds betting.

Free At Last – honest performer who has won 4 out of last 6 starts. Stepped up to 2400m for the first time last start, running on to be beaten 1.75 length behind Celtus. Meets Celtus 2.5kg worse in this race. At 5/1 in current fixed odds betting, under true odds.

True Steel – a repeat of last start effort (over 2000m) would put this fellow right in the firing line. Can he do it over 3200m? By JEUNE and did lead all the way to take out the Winter Cup (2400m) back in July. Currently 15/2 fixed odds.

Shoeless – On the comeback trail since running 3rd in the 2002 Cup beaten 1.5 lengths. Although unplaced this preparation, has shown glimpses of old form. Set for this race and has done the prep work. EW chance at 16/1 in current fixed odds betting.

King Canute – Ran on strongly to finish a close 4th in this year’s Derby over 2400m. Running on well last start when beaten 4.5 lengths by Celtus over 2400m. Meets Celtus 0.5kg better. Not the roughest but seems under the odds at the current price offered at 7/1.

Glitzy Show –Has performed well (showing good staying signs), since switching to middle distance racing back in September. If you can forgive her last run, at 25/1 a good EW chance.

Mercedario – Hasn’t won past 2200m, but has been placed over 2400m. Battled on fairly last few starts and not badly treated at the weights. Some hope at 20/1.

Alibi Bay – well beaten in the 2002 Cup and recent form well below best. Perhaps a place chance on best form. 50/1 in current market.

Superior Star – Winner of this year’s WA Oaks over 2400m. Last start fought on well when beaten 3 lengths by Celtus over 2400m. Meets Celtus 2.5kg worse in this race. Some chance but under the odds at the current price on offer at 13/1.

Caribbean Royale – well beaten only start over 2400m although has run some nice races over shorter journeys. Battled on well behind Main Stage over 2200m on Saturday. Is a doubt at the trip and looks under the odds at the current price on offer of 18/1.

Indigo King – Has won and been placed over 2400m. Well beaten by Celtus over 2400m two starts back. Showed pace but weakened over 2200m on Saturday. Only a rough chance. Currently showing 40/1.

Personal Drum – currently racing well below best. Has a habit of bobbing up at long odds. Does lack class but may stay the 3200m better than a lot of others. A little EW won’t hurt the bank – currently showing 100/1.

I'll be treating tomorrow's Perth Cup as just another metrop middle distance race. No offence Sandgroper, but looks pretty poor class to me, even for a Perth Cup - why don't they move it to a better time of the year - to attact some decent interstate stayers?

For me (3) Celtus looks the best chance, but admit pretty short odds.

(2) Free At Last, same owner as Celtus tp give Mrs J M Evans the quinella.

(9) Higgins Gold for third.

(8) Include Glitzy Show for some value.

Also tomorrow like (3) Prince Of Vasac & (7) Corporate Rocket in the 1st. (5) Chaumont in the 2nd. Tri in the 3rd - 1,2 & 4. (12) Pretentious in the 8th & (12) Family Money in the last.

Good luck everyone & have a great new year!

Forgot to comment on what is your best race tomorrow - race 7. Top field of flyers, interesting to see what time they run. Still working out my bets for the race - should get some value.

Anyway, considering most starters have been around for a while, what I found intriguing, is that Secret Remedy, Polygram, Double Jewel & Moon Talk are all wearing blinkers for the 1st time. Seems a little unusual to me anyway

Have not rated this race yet, but top four look awfully hard to beat.

Have a healthy respect for the former eastern state's galloper BARALAE. Nice win 2nd up at Pinjarra - 1500m. Has won over 2100m in Vic.

ALIBI BAY freshened up following his unplaced run in the cup, looks nicely weighted.

SPACE AGE an impressive winner on Sat, although wins in WA have been over shorter distances has won over 2100m in the east.

KIM LISA - return to form with the addition of blinkers last start, when running on strongly behind Kentiara in the La Trice Classic (1800m) a couple of weeks back. Has won over 2200m at Ascot.

Actually the GERALDTON CUP is on Sunday, Sandgroper

If (1) Space Age repeats his last run, should win.

Like you Sandgroper, have a healthy respect for (4) Baralae.

Not sure about (2) Kim Lisa & (3) Alibi Bay, neither have shown much for a while, but as you have said, Kim Lisa's last run was an improvement on previous starts.

On best form (7) Jeune's Fantasy would go close, last start winner Mt Barker, so now finally back in form, after returning from a long break.

Of the locals, give (5) Classic Piece a strong chance. All 8 wins have been at GERALDTON & has run the odd good race in town.

Sandgroper
15th January 2004, 11:58 AM
Yes the cup is on Sunday MyHatMyCoat, my mistake

After rating this race (there's a few without town form) does look more open than I first thought. If you fancy any of the emergencies and they get a start, not without an EW chance.

I agree with MyHatMyCoat - Jeune's Fantasy & Classic Piece, are also genuine chances.

Good luck if you have a bet.

Not me Paddy, best I could do was 3rd.
Didn’t outlay much as it was a race that I couldn’t rate all starters (including 1st and 2nd) – no town form.
Interestingly both 1st and 2nd are ex eastern state performers. The winner has only recently stepped up to distance racing and on retrospect has not had his share of luck in those events. Nice ride by Alana.

According to a mate of mine who was up at Geraldton for the weekend - very successful meeting, great crowd and Rogan Josh (who lead the cup field out) is in fine fettle, given he has been in retirement for a while.

I'm expecting a big run from Satin Special in the last race at Mt. Barker tomorrow. Won the same race last year, has the same weight, and will be ridden by Alana Sansom.

Admittedly a better field this year, but she did win very easily last year.

Promising stayer Kyoshi, although not well weighted (imo), will still be hard to beat.

Sulo Warrior another with a strong chance. Just pipped in last years Mt. Barker Cup over 2000m. Later placed in the Albany Cup (behind Kyoshi & Satin Special) & then next start won at Ascot.

Also include (first4) Shy Wild, who stepped up in distance (1800m) last start at Albany, following excellent Ascot form. Made his run way too late on that day (imo) and was only beaten 1.25len.

3rd February 2004, 02:36 PM
Looks an open race El Gordo. Would also consider Special Jester and for that matter Warning Tune.

SJ is back in winning form and WT is a multiple city winner over distance.

The Mungrup Sprint is another interesting race, with both Jumallique and Face Your Fears lining up for their 3rd start in the sprint - Jumallique winning in 2002 and Senate Lease lining up for his 2nd tilt.

Not to mention some other promising types in this race, including Bletch Magic & Jarnot.

Looking foward to both races.

SPECIAL JESTER looks poor value in today's Esperance Cup if he starts anywhere near the odds quoted in this morning's press.

Surprised you have not included Poziere (R6) and Mr Callahan (R7) in your selections, MyHatMyCoat.

I'd also be including Proven Destiny (R6) in the multiples - although better suited over a bit more ground, may be fresh enough to run a good race - listed at 30/1 this morning.

Lombo Choice (R8) looks nicely placed EW, and Overmaster (R9) could surprise EW at good odds (listed at 50/1) with young Pike on top.

In the Esperance Cup, I would include Mr Debernals. This horse was not beaten far in last year's cup, finishing 3rd just behind a couple of handy horses in Miller's Fancy and Kyoshi.

Thanks Collingwood & Merriguy. We did OK in 3 of the 7 races – enough to finish in front, depending on how you punted. Selections in the other 4 races not all too flash, some very disappointing runs - CALIFORNIUM did manage a place at nice odds in the 1st, same for SEEMINGLY RICH in the 6th. That’s racing.

Paddy
13th March 2004, 07:39 AM
Redwoldt looks under odds in the 3rd, not saying he can't win, but he will have to work hard with the likes of My Leo & Seton Hill (value) hard to beat.

In race 6 I was impressed with the last start winning performance of Lilac Hill. If she can handle the step up to weekend class, could easily make it 3 in a row.

Tribulations in the last, looks a good EW be

Legend18
13th March 2004, 10:08 AM
Yep Moon Talk looks good for me. And Redwoldt definately will be under the odds, so my moneys on My Leo. Race 4's pretty tough.. Rulain's finally drawn a decent barrier so maybe this is his race.

Race 5, Covertly and Foxaround too short for me.. So I'll go Miss Dansk who ran a good 2nd behind Foxaround.

Race 6, well.. who knows

Quite a number here like the Bunbury track – Finito, Polygram & Poliwhirl are all undefeated at the track. Early Express, Kensyl Bay, Mr Callahan & Fred Who, have all raced well at Bunbury previously. Both Kensyl Bay & Fred Who are likely to be very good odds.

I’m expecting Paul Harvey to take Early Express to an early lead from a very wide draw and be very hard to beat. Think Hot Shot Brother will sit on the pace, and be just a little too strong. Mapperholic for 3rd. Have to have a little EW on one of my favs – Tribula with Alana onboard.

Paddy sat back in his seat, poured out a cup of tea and lit a cigarette.

A policeman arrived a short time later and knocked on the cab door which Paddy then opened, 'what do you think you are doing? asked the policeman in a sharp tone,

'Sure I'm having me tea break, replied Paddy,

'And what do you work at? asked the policeman,

'Agh shure I deliver bridges,! smiled Paddy!

I’m tipping Wool Zone. Caught wide most of the way in the Pinjarra Cup, but still managed a place. Even fitter following that run – he’ll do me EW at the 11/2 currently on offer. Load and Lockett, Main Stage & Kentiara to fight out the places.

Bad enough writing oneself off, but certainly doesn’t help matters when you’ve finally running out of drinkin money, when along comes the omen bet of the day - KILLARNEY MAGIC & DANCING PADDY in Ballarat dog 6. We made a nice profit & of course continued on drinkin – oh my head!

For what it’s worth (not thinking straight) suggest Kentiara the one to beat today. Load and Lockett strong chance if you forget his last run failure. Main Stage and Wool Zone to fill the top 4.

Luck in running to L&L

A great couple of days - just love Bunbury this time of year. Just got back, already looking forward to next year.

What a finish, thought Dundally was going to win at one stage - top ride by young Parnham - great rails run, looked to hit the lead momentarily, but the other two fought back.

What's next loadandlockett, out for a well deserved spell.

On paper look the main chances.
A couple of unraced - maybe watch any betting move.
James The Jet & perhaps Lust For Dust, should be suited by the step up in distance.

Will stick to my original thoughts - Stage Doll, Pennywest & Moonfire.

Field looks a little below par for a Grp II.

What chance the lightly raced Fatal Attraction with the pontiff on top?

partypooper
3rd April 2004, 12:59 AM
Well if you fancy Stage Doll, you'd have to at least have a saver on the "pontif" ...but lightly raced maiden?, who knows, the girls can do funny things with a bit of sun on their backs, and it's forcast 30c tomorrow.

But MY choice for what it's worth is Kymtu

Paddy
3rd April 2004, 08:06 AM
Thanks partypooper. Yes Kymtu has done nothing wrong. Also lightly raced & was running on OK last start over 2200M. Will include.

Yes Paddy Dedicated Miss does look almost a special, if she repeats her last run. I've just got a slight doubt over the 1800M though.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Corporate Bruce return to some form, his last run wasn't all that bad.

And don't dismiss CP, not well in on the weights, but improving all the time

VOLITION an early scratching.

The girls look a wee bit stronger than the fellas.

COVERTLY (with the pontiff aboard) just over REFEMME.
COVERTLY meets REFEMME better at the weights & should turn the table. Both drawn a bit wide, but hopefully will settle around midfield, and be too strong for the rest in the run home.

Best of the fellas - LOCAL LEGEND & REDWOLDT. Both also drawn wide but should have the pace to settle just off the lead.

The undefeated STORMY NOVA has blinkers added & is worth throwing into your multiples.

Paddy, I agree that Covertly looks VERY good, especially for the place (odds permitting) but can I ask your "expert" opinion about Field Commander in the last? as although it does not come up as a top rating, my gut feeling is that is was at the very least "inconvenienced" at the start (last start) to tell you the truth I couldn't believe it didn't run a place , but there you go??????

Glad you mentioned expert in quotes partypooper, for a minute there I thought you were talking to someone else

The last looks pretty open to me partypooper.
Smallish field & what looks to be pace assured will suit Field Commander.

Personally have a liking for Beau Pago.
Rogue's March might also lob up at outside odds.

Providing the pace is on in the last, Field Commander will be suited and should probably win, as long as he isnt inconvenienced again. I'm liking the chances of Our Millster in the first.. other than Covertly could be my bet of the day

Glenn Smith just joined the list of suspended jocks. Serving 2 weeks for failing to fulfil riding engagement/s due to being excessively overweight. Easter chocs!?

A jocks life can be tough enough as it is without that kind of suspension!

Good to hear from you Perth Placegetter.
How's the punting over there in the sunny west? Nice win by Mr Sandgroper in the Derby.

Can’t complain Paddy, the punting has been good, just chipping away.

Yes, good win by Mr Sandgroper, also nice run by Fatal Attraction.

As you probably observed Harvey followed King just about everywhere.

King elected to go wide (to make his run) before the turn while Harvey stuck to the fence (and got a dream run).

In the end I thought an appropriate result.

Notice you’ve had a bit of success of late. Good for you

Shaun McGruddy returns from suspension from midnight tonight. I think one of the most underrated jocks in WA.

Daniel Staeck successfully appealed against a six-week suspension. Now that doesn't happen too often.

Trainer S.J. Wolfe (that very sad SAVAGE CABBAGE affair) has been disqualified for a period of twelve months.

Actually Paddy, trainer Steve Wolfe had a two-year disqualification cut to 12 months yesterday when stewards completed rehearing an inquiry into the barrier trial fall of Savage Cabbage.

Wolfe had received the two-year disqualification in December 2002.

Reports are that Wolfe is not happy with result and will likely take the case to the Supreme Court and apply to retain a stay of proceedings to continue training in the meantime.

I note that Steve Wolfe has just had an interim stay of proceedings granted by the Racing Penalties Appeal Tribunal, which allows him to keep on training.

Wolfe had been previously training on a stay of proceedings for nearly 12 months.

Now let’s see. Harvey has hopped off Covertly to ride Plastered. Plastered has had one start for a narrow win at Pinjarra Park. Paul King has hopped off Local Legend to ride Covertly. Willie Pike now rides Local Legend.

After all that have to think REDWOLDT will take out the double. Strong win in the Karrakatta and even better suited by this distance.

METALDALE should make the quinella again. Finished the race off well in the Karrakatta, extra distance should not trouble.

COVERTLY a bit disappointing in the Karrakatta should be better suited at the 1400M.

Like the way THE BLACK CIGAR got to the line in the Karrakatta. Put him in for 4th.

Will also include in the multiples, Refemme as honest as they come but might find the 1400M a bit too far on the day against this lot, and Harvey's mount Plastered, must have shown Harvey something.
