G'day steve. Just noticed the greys are doing well at Mt Barker today. Costalot Girl winning at around 25/1 and Hearnster running 2nd at around 7/1. Just one more to go by my calculation - Moondance Magic in the last. Should be very hard to beat.

William's Steal given 60kgs in Ascot on Saturday. He has won his past 3 races at Esperance but 60kgs in the city???? The handicapper has killed him. Very sure they'll have to put a apprentice on him and reduce the impost to 57. At 57 with the right barrier this horse may prove hard to run down. Usually a front runner type of horse, if he can get away with some easy sectionals early then he will give you a run for your money.
Grey horse too Steve :)

Interestingly, the only horse nominated for the same race on Saturday, that William's Steal has previously met, is Pinchbeck. Goes back about 12 months but William's Steal beat Pinchbeck easily giving that horse 1kg before an apprentice claim. Williams Steal now handicapped to give that horse 5kg having won 3 country starts since whilst Pinchbeck has won once and placed four times in the city since that meeting ?!?

Bunbury today...
Race 2 Kool Thing, 4YO mare by Jeune so staying may be her caper. Did little in 3 starts in Vic before venturing west. First start in the west (Pinjarra) did reasonably well (beaten 4.75lens) over 1400 after a slow start then put in a shocker over 1400 at Geraldton when fancied – perhaps a victim of the 2nd-Up syndrome?
Race 4 Evert perhaps another victim of the 2nd-Up syndrome when well beaten at Ascot last start. Prior to that nice WA debut run C2 at Pinjarra. She’s a winner Newcastle and Kembla Grange over today’s distance so a good performance is on the cards. Ex South Aussie Mr Jazz Man also in same race and will be fancied. Placed only 2 starts in the west both in the city and from a good draw will no doubt be up with the leading bunch throughout.
Race 5 sees a big jump in distance and class for former Victorian Freedom Tower. Will be interesting to see how he goes. Former NSW resident and maiden performer Uganda did OK last start midweek class at Ascot over 2200 and will be improved by that run only his 2nd since a spell.
Race 7 will see the WA debut of Magnificence a lightly raced 4YO mare formerly from Qld. Won at first start over 1200 then spelled. Returned for a solid effort in a C3 at Eagle Farm then a disappointing effort when hot fav in a C1 at Ipswich. Not raced since but you’d expect a good performance today on form to-date.

Nice win 2ndLast trial yesterday at Belmont by Miss Castaway. The Marooned / Sinfully Wild mare ran equal best of the day unextended.
Miss Castaway boasts a very good record of 23 starts for 9x1st, 5x2nd, 2x3rd and 2x4th.
Her last 4 starts at Belmont before spelling produced 3 wins and a close 2nd behind Beyond Dispute.
Will be surprised if she doesn’t add a few more win notches to her belt this campaign.

Looking at this race in a bit of detail (re handicapping) you do have to scratch your head. Further evidence - Trousers only placing (win) in WA at Pinjarra carrying 55.5kgs goes up 4kgs to 59.5 and is asked to concede 0.5kg to Royal Lott who has won his last 2 at Ascot carrying 56kg and 57.5kg!??

Sat 07 Jan 2006 R5 # 4 Our Selection. There are three reasons why I think this old boy can win. First, his figures are very strong, despite having been up this prep forever. Second, he looks to get a soft run in or near lead and can 'wind it up' from the 600m whilst his dangers are stuffing about at the tail. And third, 'Handbrake Turner' goes on today. Lets hope he lets it off today and gives this roughie every chance. Lets also hope I am not stark raving mad tipping a 9yo!
Sat 07 Jan 2006 R7 #1 King Wally continues to improve this prep despite his last 4 runs looking very similar. He was knocked off by nice 4yo Ser Grill last time when they raced along a bit (He returned a 105 that day compared to the winners' 104). They will probably run this hard again today, but he has at least a length on his rivals. $3 MINIMUM PRICE.
Good punting,

Tricky race with not a lot of exposed 1600 form.
The Lee Freedman trained (5) TALONS SHOWN is my top selection. Nicely weighted and has a very good strike rate: wins 43% places 64%
(7) PLAY TO WIN is another who looks well weighted and also boasts a good strike rate, looks the main danger.
The David Hayes trained (10) KOURNEROV next best goes very well this track and her last start effort over the 1600 very good.
For 4th (3) MT BILLY has a good draw does OK this track and has his share of ability on his day.
Including (14) SHANIKOV as the value selection. Hasn’t raced for 2 months but taking the gamble still race fit. Does OK this track and should run a strong 1600.

Grey horse too Steve :)

haha thanks mate. I think the handicapper did kill him (giving him 60) unless the handicapper knew they would of put an apprentice on him to reduce his impost to 57...at 60kgs I am not too sure if William's Steal could of hanged on.

Good to see Watevi at double figure odds bounce back on Saturday after his slightly disappointing run previous start over the 1600 journey. Took a pretty good one to catch him – Elsie The Eagle. The latter shows a lot of promise winning 6 of only 10 starts.

Not wrong Elsie The Eagle DCFC! a pretty good one indeed!!
Looked like Carbery had pinched the race (again) on Watevi but ETE unwound her characteristic finish to overhaul Watevi and win easily on the line. ETE being set for the Bunbury Stakes in the autumn so I believe.

Although well beaten last start at Albany did win 2nd-up last campaign.

Narrow but convincing win for the lightly raced Marauding stallion Exchequer in the last trial heat at Lark Hill yesterday. At his last official race start he was unplaced favourite in the Group III R.J. Peters Stakes back in November 2004. Had ten starts prior to that race for five wins – four at Ascot and one at Belmont.

R4 King Kade reappears after his impressive win a couple of weeks back at Pinjarra. Goes from a C1 to a C3 today but also steps up in distance which should suit. Expecting EW odds given the class rise.
R7 Prince Firebolt not raced for some 12 months but was placed in a recent Bunbury barrier trial behind the smart Kames Hope. This fellow has travelled a bit, first start Caulfield then raced in SA then 4 starts in WA (all at Belmont back in 2004) followed by another short stint back in Vic. C1 running in a C3 today but has performed well first-up in the past.

Hi AdrianLee! How are you mate? Booring with Geraldton abandoned!! What do ya reckon?!
I think it is a shame today meeting was abandoned...could they possibly put every race from Thursday to Sunday? That would make Sunday a massive day of racing for sure...it'll be something around 15? races. They should start early morning like Ascot did one time.
In any event, this Geraldton event should surely be a great days racing now...two huge races which hopefully will ensure a great crowd for Geraldton.

Yep, today's abandonment very disappointing :( especially for the race club, local trainers and the no doubt the anticipated large oncourse holiday crowd.
Not sure why they didn't reschedule the meeting for tomorrow  at worse the same outcome i.e. if the track didn't recover in time or the rain continued.
Still, this amount of rain is non seasonal for this time of year so I guess it's hard to expect too much contingency planning!
