Hot off the press - The Melbourne autumn campaign for Early Express is over!

Trainer Peter Giadresco discovered the 7YO gelding was suffering minor heat on his near side yesterday morning and Early Express is now heading home.

The injury is not serious but would have prevented Early Express from running in the Australian Cup.

Early Express will be spelled and then prepared for a spring campaign.

Great odds for SWIFT JEUNE and UNIVERSAL WARRIOR in particular imo, thanks westman. Was hoping to get a bit better for Danny Blue, might wait a bit ;)

Danny Blue ran a nice race for 2nd and I expect will improve further for his return clash with Professional Lady who did win very well. Universal Warrior at cricket score odds got up for 3rd :)

Looking forward to the Bunbury Cup!

Great win by Professional Lady who is currently on the limit for the Bunbury Cup but could be penalised up to 3kg for her win yesterday. Good run Universal Warrior who didn't have the best of luck early in the straight and nice run Zoometric who motored for 5th after being held up for runs during the race.

After the race it was reported that Early Express didn't travel well throughout in the FUTURITY STAKES on Saturday, in retrospect must have been the reason. A plus they've discovered the condition and are now taking corrective action.

westman

Connections should be pretty please with that. The way she won the Pinjarra Cup 3kg could have easily been justified by the handicapper.

On the subject of outstanding efforts Johnnie Roucke could prove to be something special if his win on Saturday is any indication. Only having his 2nd race start he won with plenty in reserve but still ran 57.98 for the 1000m!! He looked very classy!

Entered in R2 Ascot tomorrow. Drawn the marble. The Pontiff to ride again.

I'm expecting Paul Harvey to have a great day tomorrow!

In addition to Johnnie Roucke Paul has another 3 excellent rides (imo) - R6 Calico Blue R7 Raw Metal & R8 Brave Empire. I've also been following Nikita Blue also in R8.

Was a very good run indeed anchor. Did it the hard way as you've stated and still won by 3 1/4lens. The rest of the field finished the race strung out like brownes cows due to the fast early pace.

The fastest heat winner yesterday was Index Case, the lightly raced 4YO won his heat easily with plenty in reserve.

Originally raced in NSW has had one start in WA - beaten fav in a C4 at Pinjarra December 05. Excuses that day as he missed the kick and received an early check. Danny Morton trains which is a plus. Might be worth a watch first few starts this time around.

Racing tomorrow Pinjarra R5 - good barrier..good driver (S MC GRUDDY)..C2

When punters look at the stats from the J.C.Roberts Stakes from Ascot last Sat. they'll see only 2.25 len covered the first 7 runners, indicating that a bunched finish involved some luck/lack of. When the replay appears on the WA website next couple of days have a good long look at Scenic Shot. That 1len margin is hiddeous, arrogant. The WATC Derby is the target so I looked at it's breeding. By Scenic (sired Derby winners Blevic and Universal Prince) from Sweepshot who's daddy was Dr.Grace, Derby,BMW winner etc etc. He therefore should extend his brilliance over the classic distance.

Thought Scenic Shot could have won by a good 3 lens had the pontiff been serious at the end. Perhaps not pushed out due to that injury scare a week or so back.

The goss around locally last couple of weeks is that neither west aussie (Black Tom / Master Minx) had enough time off to fully recover from their Perth Cup runs and will no be at their best for today's Cup :( Hope the goss is wrong!

woody

That's weird? for some reason my last post looked to be registered but the post is not showing??!

Anyway will re-do:
The word around the traps locally past couple of weeks is that Black Tom and Master Minx never fully recovered from their Perth Cup campaigns during their shortish spells and have been racing below their best. Hope proven wrong but if any truth you'd think they would be risks today.

(15) Tubular Bells is my top pick. Undefeated and looks a stayer of real potential.

(5) Break The Barrier has won over 2600M at Randwick and is a last winner of the Gosford Cup.

(1) Black Tom would have been my top pick but am now concerned not at best.

Include (21) Danebar now he gets a start. Has some solid staying form.

(4) Tigirana and (3) Master Minx my roughies.

I see there's been a track upgrade to dead - won't hurt the sandgropers chances any;)

Sticking with BLACK TOM this is the race he's been set for.

TUBULAR BELLS very promising but will he run out a strong 3200?

INTRIGUING looks nicely weighted.

Can't leave out MASTER MINX 20/1 currently.

Thanks for the post woody. Read it earlier today and excluded both Black Tom and Master Minx from my main batch of selections (they were already borderline based on their ordinary form of late). End result - managed the trifecta built around Tubular Bells running 1st or 2nd. Exalted Time who was another borderline selection (recent SA form good but more importantly stuck with the lovely Clare Lindop) made it into the main batch as a result of excluding BT and MM. Cheers :)

Great win BELLE BIZARRE today, hasn't she improved leaps and bounds.
Also good to see LEGEND EXPRESS back in form. Thought the addition of blinkers last start was a step in the right direction, only surprise today was the price - $20.90 a place - not bad for a horse with a record (prior to today) of 22 starts for 9 wins, 4 seconds and 1 third! :)

Predicting a great day for the west with the other Sandgroper Holy Bounty to take out the Coolmore Classic. Narrowly beaten by Candy Vale last start, that horse running a huge race in the Australian Cup.

Open Cut did well in Tassie recently and should be at peak for this.

Plans just pipped by Candy Vale last start (same race Holy Bounty) but meets Holy Bounty worse at weights.

Celtic Bloom thereabouts recently and not badly weighted.

Geraldton today…

Race 4 Pigsley’s Grief ex Victorian who has had 2 starts in the west performing reasonably (C5) on both occasions. Best form in the past over distances around 1600, so you would expect the 1200 today to be too short but should be running on. Also racing out of class (is C3) but does have an apprentice claim.

Race 5 D'Yquem another ex Victorian who has now had 3 starts in the west most recent running 2nd C1 this track over 1600. Up in class (C3) today but also up in distance which should suit. With the services of the lovely Alana could surprise.

Hopefully some of you who read the 'Ventured West' posts may have remembered Pigsley's Grief. Sorry I missed including yesterday, was in a bit of a rush. All five starts in WA have been OK, his last run over 1600 was a solid effort. Obviously takes a while to peak. Anyway as most would know, he won the Walkaway Cup yesterday at odds 25/1+. Hope you had a little EW.

2 Charlie Beau (J Whiting)....open $1.65, mid $1.55, post $2.0.....2nd
4 Kia Ora Miss (P Harvey)....open $3.2, mid $3.3, post $2.3......1st

On the flipside, in R2 Go Beserk was the only firmer about $4.4 -> $3.1, and after having a easy run behind the leader, did absolutely nothing in the straight.

Sat 18 Mar 2006 R3#3 Storm On By. Two nice 103's his last two show this quality Metal Storm gelding can figure prominently. Chased home Graduate Boy last time but now up to the 1400m I think he run past that horse and win. Handbrake Turner gets on for today's race; lets hope he releases it in the straight! Danger is #2 who has similar figs.

The greys at Pingrup did pretty well on Saturday with Awesome Grey (1st), Miss Pavlinovich (1st), Awesome Grey (2nd) yes it won R1 & then backed up again R3 to run 2nd!! and Moordiyap (4th).

Had no idea where Pingrup was so did a bit of a search and found the following:

“Pingrup is approximately 360km south east of Perth. Pingrup has their annual horse race day where locals and visitors have the occasional bet on the track and in the two-up tent. Other events held throughout the day include the Ute race, the bucking bull and dressing up a mallee root  Live entertainment and food and drink are also supplied. Why not come and join in with the locals.”

Why not indeed, sounds a hoot! ;)

Denmarket most likely not suited by the track condition today, sportsmad. Agree Yell looks a strong chance.

The one I like most is King Rex. Goes well first-up, good trial win recently, drawn well and goes OK Rosehill.

Ascot Saturday...

Huge jump in class for the former Victorian galloper EGOTISM in race 3. Nice WA debut to run 2nd at Bunbury but that was a maiden. Must be showing connections something to be brought to the city for her next start. Perhaps a place.

Ex Victorian mare MARANELLO MISS makes her WA debut in race 5. Not renowned for her first-up performances and only trial in WA was well beaten. Give her a few runs.

The former NSW galloper DR LOANE will line-up for his 3rd start in WA in race 7. With 2 runs under his belt and the step up in distance could surprise.

Former Victorian gelding Tom Coureuse race 8, showed early speed at his first start in WA over 1200M at Ascot. Not beaten far that day and will be improved by the run.

The champion hoop may not ride a winner today.
R1 Just Les - looks the leader and be hard to run down. Could be some pressure though which would help Canny Jack to run him down.
R2 Ravinia - was left standing by Paris Petard last start, meets that filly much better at the weights but I think another miss for Harvey.
R3 Scopaciri - Could lead from out there but might have to work a little. With a big field it's a good risk.
R4 Action Pak - 58.5kg, even field, many runners, even though well drawn is worth betting against.
R6 Scenic Shot - clearly his best chance, looks the winner. Problem could be getting a clear run as he might be cluttered up from bar 1. Won't be betting in the race as it'll be too short but not confident about anything else.
R8 Real Halo - Was a 'cushy' win last start, was outside the leader(surprise) in a slowly run race. Harvey has jumped off Raw Metal which is a pointer but might not be enough.

Sat 25 Mar 2006 LAY R7#3 Stanz The Man. This 3yo upset the applecart last time when beating more favoured runners when pinched break on turn and returned 98 rating. Today his max is 100. Winner prediction is 104. Stanz has a tough assignment to race on the speed and win today. Confident lay.

1 2.15 Paris Petard 2 58.5 Shaun Mc Gruddy 6 6 1 1:05:36 (34:23)

On times and weight you could conclude that Paris Petard was the better run of the two today, but just how much did they each have up their sleeve?

Wouldn't be writing off Ravinia! Her run today behind Paris Petard good also.

On the ball westwinners! still don't believe the odds that were on offer for Lord Lonsdale, shooting for (and getting) 5 wins on the trot!

The best performances for the greys yesterday at Ascot were It Will Do (2nd 6/1), Diamond Grey (2nd 30/1) and So Long Syd (3rd 20/1).

Scenic Shot wasn’t handicapped to win this race and with his inside draw and the rail out 12 Metres it should have been obvious to most pro-punters that this was the race he would lose.

It will be a different matter in the Derby when we get back to the set weights!

Notwithstanding the race was a Set Weights & Penalties race, you comments are interesting FD, ones I would be like to know more about in a more detailed manner. The reason being that according to the handicapper's own ratings Scenic Shot was rated 9.5kgs above any other runner in the race yet only had to give a maximum of 3.5kgs.

Kalgoorlie Sat...

In race 3 ex Victorian galloper Wit And Wisdom debuts in WA. Maiden winner 1200 Murtoa Aug 05 then placed C1 (Sep) and C2 (Oct). Well backed all those starts and did trial ok Kalgoorlie earlier this month.

Ran 3rd at WA debut beaten 1 1/4 lens. Fitter and 1200 today (race 6) should suit.

WA Carnival in full swing next Saturday, Ladies Day, with the WA Oaks. Wave Rock the favorite.

Following Saturday there's the WA Derby and of course the 2YO Karrakatta Plate. From this weekends racing we're in for an almighty clash with two outstanding 2yos.

Paris Petard will no doubt start favorite as she carried 58.5kg and will drop to 53.5kg, won 5/5, and won twice over the Ascot 1200m. She also ran about 4lens faster in her last 600m sectional than the c&g division. S.Mcgruddy looked to be working a bit on her on the turn then she let down brilliantly.Fred Kersley has another good one.

Canny Jack will carry 56kg(from the 55kg on Sat.) and had some front end speed to help him. But his potential is really untapped. He picked them up in about 3 strides then J.Whiting let him float along the last 50m. The 1200m should also suit him. Champion trainer George Daly.

With some other races like St.Leger, Sires' Produce, Strickland, Hyperion quality racing will be at both ends of Australia. Bring it on!

Yep, bring it on anchor! Geez, can't remember being this excited re the Karrakatta Plate..think we might have two really good 2YOs that could easily make their mark over east in the future, assuming HK doesn't get them first!

Thought I read some where that Wave Rock's main mission is the Derby? Not sure if the report mentioned also running in the Oaks.

In any case could be another girl / boy clash of great interest - Wave Rock Vs Scenic Shot.

Watching with interest for results of today’s trials at Belmont in particular the performances of Metallic Storm winner 5 from 6 and having her 2nd trial since a spell, won the last. And Mr Sandgroper returning from a spell and an unsuccessful short stint east.

Forget about any clash - Wave Rock is gone, broke down in training this morning & probably will be retired.

Shocking news for connections and trainer Caroline Grant. Sustained a strained near fore flexor tendon during track work at Ascot this morning.

Oaks winning chances for the likes of Moodometer and perhaps Imaginaire and Say Cherie (both having problems of their own) obviously greatly enhanced.
